Netflix’s animated film, KPop Demon Hunters, was the surprise hit of the year, achieving remarkable success. Its songs quickly became popular online, topping music charts globally and even surpassing well-known artists. While there was talk of two follow-up projects – a live-action movie and a musical – the creator has confirmed that the characters from HUNTRIX and the Saja Boys will remain animated and won’t appear as live-action characters.
The creator of the animated series *KPop Demon Hunters* has dismissed the possibility of a live-action adaptation. Maggie Kang explained to BBC News that the show’s unique tone and humor are better suited for animation. She believes a live-action version would feel too realistic and wouldn’t capture the spirit of characters like Rumi, Mira, and Zoey (and their weJinu counterparts).
Chris Appelhans, who helped create the film, also talked about the discussion. He explained that animation allows you to combine amazing and unrealistic qualities. For example, the character Rumi can be funny and silly, then suddenly sing and perform an acrobatic move, and even fall from the sky. Appelhans believes the movie’s fun comes from these over-the-top actions, and trying to replicate that in still artwork would make it look stiff and unnatural.
The recent news has disappointed many K-pop fans, but speculation is still high about which K-drama actors would be perfect for the roles. Good news for fans of KPop Demon Hunters: a second movie is officially in the works, and it will likely delve deeper into the characters’ histories.
