Kendrick Lamar warned Drake over the phone before their battle began, says Joe Budden

As a long-time hip-hop enthusiast who’s been through the highs and lows of rap beefs since the days of Tupac and Biggie, I must say that the ongoing saga between Kendrick Lamar and Drake has been one for the ages. The intensity, the lyrical prowess, the allegations – it’s all too reminiscent of the legendary battles that shaped rap music as we know it today.

By the end of December 31, 2024, it’s likely that many people will remember the heated hip-hop rivalry between Kendrick Lamar and Drake as one of the year’s biggest stories. However, if something more significant occurs before then, this might change.

Ever since the conflict started, it appears as though every rap critic worldwide has shared their opinion on it, and Joe Budden is one of them. In his latest podcast episode, this ex-Slaughterhouse member suggested that Kendrick Lamar and Drake held a discussion prior to releasing their diss tracks, setting some boundaries beforehand.

Joe mentioned that he heard Drake and Kendrick Lamar had a conversation prior to releasing any diss tracks, though he isn’t certain if it’s accurate. He said the discussion was reminiscent of the Teddy Pendergrass part in a delicate situation: “Hey, let’s chat about how we want this to play out, what our plans are, are we rapping? If so, let’s keep it respectful.

It’s widely understood at this point that the confrontation between the rappers was far from cordial, as they hurled accusations at each other. For instance, Drake claimed that Kendrick had mistreated his fiancée, Whitney Alford, who is also the mother of his children. Conversely, Kendrick accused Drake of being a pedophile and a colonizer.

Moreover, it’s widely perceived that Kendrick emerged victorious from their rivalry, largely due to the massive success of his song “Not Like Us,” which continues to resonate on radios, social media platforms, TV shows, and as background music in various settings.

However, let me clarify, is there going to be another round of the conflict? This is due to the fact that Drake hinted at it in a video he posted last month which has since been deleted. In this video, he shared a clip featuring retired NBA player Rasheed Wallace who predicted his Detroit Pistons would win against the Indiana Pacers in the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals.

In the clip, Wallace casually states that the article can be placed anywhere – on the cover, inside pages, top or bottom half – because they are confident they will win game two.

Kendrick made a statement confirming his participation in Super Bowl LIX, which will take place in February 2025. In a video, he expressed, “There’s just one chance to claim a title.” He added emphatically, “No second rounds for me.
