As a longtime TV watcher, it’s impossible to overstate how much Buffy the Vampire Slayer changed the game. You see its impact everywhere – from shows like Supernatural to even something like the new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. And Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy? She was a huge role model for so many young women. Speaking of which, I just learned something really cool about the upcoming Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Kathryn Newton, who’s acting alongside SMG in the sequel, actually wears an outfit in the film that’s a direct nod to Buffy Summers – Sunnydale’s iconic Slayer! It’s a fun little Easter egg for fans, and a testament to Buffy’s lasting legacy.
Okay, so I just learned something really fun about the new movie! Apparently, the costume designer subtly paid tribute to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The actress playing Samara Weaving’s sister, Emma Newton, wore a blue button-down over a white tank – a direct nod to one of Buffy’s iconic looks from the very first episode, “Welcome to the Hellmouth,” which originally aired way back in 1997 and basically launched The WB. It’s a clever little Easter egg for fans like me! And get this – Newton also styled her hair in an updo with bangs, just like Sarah Michelle Gellar did in that premiere. Sarah herself even commented on it after Newton told her about the homage – it’s just a really sweet connection between the two shows and actresses.
It’s funny because I hadn’t realized this at all. Kathryn showed me a picture of Buffy wearing a particular outfit, and she had a certain idea about it. Then, when I was filming my first scene with her, I noticed her outfit looked familiar. I mentioned it, and she asked if it did. I actually have a side-by-side comparison, and the hairstyles are identical!
Imagine how funny it would have been to see Isaac Newton in the movie Abigail! Perhaps the characters would have had a better chance against the vampires if she’d been dressed like Buffy. Though, honestly, wearing a Buffy-inspired outfit while Buffy is around is pretty awesome. Speaking of Buffy, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come comes out on March 20th, and Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to the role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, which will be available on Hulu next year.
