Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down from her role at Lucasfilm. In a recent interview, she gave updates on the many Star Wars movies currently being worked on. Some of these projects are still being planned, while others are further along in development.
Kathleen Kennedy shared updates on two upcoming Star Wars films. The project from James Mangold and Beau Willimon, exploring the origins of the Jedi, is a unique and promising script, but development is paused for now. Meanwhile, the Taika Waititi-directed movie, first announced in 2020, is still moving forward, and Kennedy praised the script as both funny and excellent.
I’m really excited about what’s happening with Star Wars! I heard Donald Glover actually wrote a script for a Lando Calrissian movie – that sounds amazing. And get this, Steve Soderbergh and Adam Driver were working on something written by Scott Burns, and she said it was fantastic. Honestly, both projects sound incredibly promising!
Kennedy indicated that certain projects, such as those from Mangold and Soderbergh, are currently paused. She also didn’t mention two other previously announced films – a movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Dave Filoni’s Heir to the Empire – which raises questions about whether those projects are still moving forward.
There’s encouraging progress on the new Star Wars trilogy being developed by Simon Kinberg. According to Kathleen Kennedy, Kinberg submitted a draft in August that showed promise, but needed work. They’ve since significantly revised the story and he recently completed a detailed treatment about a month ago. They anticipate receiving a new version in March.
She also confirmed that Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan are fully on board with Kinberg’s vision.
Kennedy mentioned that popular projects like The Mandalorian and the character Grogu will continue this year, with Star Wars: Starfighter planned for next year. However, she stressed that decisions about future Star Wars movies will now be made by the new leadership at Lucasfilm. She added that the films being developed by Taika Waititi and Donald Glover are still possibilities, but it will be up to the new team to decide if they move forward.
Kennedy also talked about the future of the franchise, explaining she didn’t want to make sequels that would clash with the story she’s still writing in the ‘Ice and Fire’ books. She clarified that while some projects have been paused, many could still happen if the opportunity feels right.
Fans of Taika Waititi and Donald Glover should be happy with this news, but those hoping for James Mangold’s Old Republic project or stories focused on Rey might have to wait a bit longer.
