On this week’s “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart criticized Donald Trump for accepting a peace prize from FIFA while simultaneously dealing with increased tensions with Venezuela.
At the beginning of Monday’s show, Jon Stewart discussed the recent FIFA World Cup draw. Instead of analyzing the challenging groups, he playfully suggested the more important question was, “who would be awarded FIFA’s first Peace Prize?”
You know, when I think about sports bringing people together, football – or soccer, if you prefer – always comes to mind. It really is the beautiful game! Anyway, enough thinking, let’s get this show on the road – who are we watching?
During the event’s draw, FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed that Donald Trump would be the first recipient of a newly created Peace Prize. Comedian Stewart responded with heavy sarcasm, exclaiming, “Oh my god! It’s incredible he won an award specifically designed to please him – the FIFA ‘appease-prize’!”
Stewart also highlighted the irony of the award itself. He played news footage showing reports that the U.S. was close to war with Venezuela, and that Trump was increasing pressure on President Nicolás Maduro.
Watching the news last night, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at the tension. Jon Stewart really went after Trump, sarcastically questioning if the president even cared about a recent, seemingly unimportant award, especially given the heightened global situation. Then, he brilliantly skewered the Pentagon’s military deployments, joking that the biggest show of force wasn’t happening overseas, but at a bachelorette party for a friend of Trump’s – Stephanie, apparently. It was a classic Stewart moment: pointed, funny, and highlighting the absurdity of it all.
FIFA launched the FIFA Peace Prize in November, an annual award recognizing people who have done remarkable things to promote peace and bring people together globally. However, FIFA didn’t explain how the winner would be selected. It came as no surprise, then, that Donald Trump was announced as the first recipient during the World Cup draw.
Gianni Infantino gave Donald Trump an award consisting of a trophy, a medal, and a certificate, acknowledging his efforts in “ending wars and saving lives.” Trump gratefully accepted the honor, calling it “one of the greatest of my life” and expressing thanks to his family.
Although Donald Trump often points to his role in negotiating international deals, the success of his involvement in some conflicts – like the one between India and Pakistan, which he discussed in a recent speech – has been questioned by the countries directly involved.
The award also emphasized the increasingly visible friendship between Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. They’ve appeared together on several occasions lately, such as at Trump’s inauguration and the peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh earlier in 2024.
This segment of “The Daily Show” highlights Jon Stewart’s view that the Peace Prize is mostly a ceremonial honor. He draws attention to the irony of Donald Trump receiving a peace award while the United States was actively engaged in military operations around the world.
