The new “Jackass” movie, the fifth in the series, is coming to theaters on June 26th, exciting fans. However, for Johnny Knoxville, the 54-year-old star and leader of the group, this film is different. He had a significant injury while filming, which means he had to take things a bit easier this time around.
During a stunt in the 2022 film “Jackass Forever,” Johnny Knoxville was flipped by a bull and landed on his head, resulting in a brain hemorrhage, concussion, broken wrist, and broken rib. This injury has made him rethink how he does dangerous stunts, and he recently discussed the upcoming movie on the “Books That Changed My Life” podcast.
Knoxville explained that he’s no longer able to do stunts that could result in a head injury. He’s already suffered too many concussions, but he’s still willing to take on other kinds of physical challenges. He added that many of his colleagues are still able to handle head-impact stunts.
Johnny Knoxville admits making the Jackass movies is physically demanding for the performers, but he still enjoys the process. He explained, “The movies are really hard on the guys, but I have a lot of fun making them.” He also added that the cast themselves are having fun, which excites him.
Details about “Jackass 5” are still scarce, but the film will include both fresh stunts and previously unseen footage from the past. Bam Margera, an original cast member, will appear in archival clips, seemingly resolving a long disagreement with the crew that began after he was let go from the previous movie. However, he won’t be performing any new stunts for this installment.
Steve-O, known for his daring stunts and comedic performances, has frequently been injured while working. In 2008, a stunt caused damage to his urethra, requiring him to use a catheter every day for over three years to avoid lasting complications. Even with these risks, he continues to be a highly dedicated performer.
Johnny Knoxville’s personal life has been as eventful as his career. He first married Melanie Lynn Cates in 1995, and they had a daughter together before divorcing in 2008. He then married Naomi Nelson in 2010, and they had two children, but separated in 2022. Most recently, he announced he’ll be marrying costume designer Emily Ting in November 2025, with filmmaker John Waters officiating the ceremony.
Even with ongoing injuries and personal difficulties, Knoxville keeps finding new ways to challenge himself in the “Jackass” movies. He’s become smarter about what he does, steering clear of stunts that could cause serious head injuries, but still takes part in plenty of other dangerous and fun activities.
He explained that he’s reached a point where he can no longer safely take head impacts, but understands others might feel differently. Now, his main focus is on safety. Movie fans will have to wait until June to see how these limitations affect his work on screen.
