John Richmond’s Homecoming Brings Rock ‘n’ Roll Rebellion Back to London

40 years ago, in 1982, I, an aspiring fashion designer based in Manchester, took the plunge and introduced my very own label to the world. I later moved to Milan, finding myself surrounded by fellow artisans who shared my vision. Now, here I am, back after all these years, presenting a cutting-edge Fall/Winter 2025 collection that reflects the essence of what we’ve been working towards for decades.

John Richmond’s latest collection, presented at Tate Modern Tanks last weekend, is renowned for its punk rock style. It proudly embraced his trademark ’80s forms and outlines, taking iconic elements such as frills, leather, and tailored suits – previously seen on Mick Jagger and George Michael – to new heights on the British catwalk. This was achieved through wider flares, broader shoulders, as well as ornamental pins and embroidered text, enhancing the original designs.

In stark contrast to the imposing Brutalist architecture of the museum, the runway show transformed into something more than just a display of fashion; it became a powerful declaration of rock ‘n’ roll spirit infused with a rebellious essence that had ignited young designer John Richmond during his formative years. To commemorate this significant occasion, the designer organized an event later in the day at the same venue, attracting influencers, artists, and fashion enthusiasts alike.

Just like the evening fashion show, this event was jointly organized with my trusted friend and acclaimed photographer Jamie Morgan. His photographs and moving images from the collection were displayed underneath the museum, casting onto central walls. These images alternated between dramatic model shots and empowering phrases such as “positive anarchy” and “destroy the past,” aiming to immerse guests right away in the atmosphere.

During the entire night, a series of DJs such as Tiffany Calver, Keyrah, and Icykof created the auditory atmosphere for the event. Much like punk rock symbolized a fresh chapter in British music during the ’80s, their mix of hip-hop, amapiano, and electronic tunes embodies the contemporary sound of British music today. Additionally, John Richmond mingled with guests on the dance floor, reveling in his return home until the wee hours of the morning.
