Jimmy Kimmel Slams “Tyranny” in Christmas Message, Declares “We Won, the President Lost”

Jimmy Kimmel delivered a pointed commentary on U.S. politics on Christmas Day with a special broadcast in the U.K. He appeared on Channel 4 as part of their yearly Alternative Christmas Message tradition, which has showcased prominent individuals since the early 1990s.

Channel 4 reported that Jimmy Kimmel dedicated a significant portion of his monologue to President Donald Trump. He told his audience that the country was experiencing a rise in authoritarianism, stating that Trump believes he has absolute power. While the message was serious, Kimmel still delivered it with his characteristic wit.

Jimmy Kimmel discussed the brief suspension of his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, explaining it stemmed from his remarks after the shooting of Charlie Kirk. He stated that Trump attempted to suppress his voice simply because Kimmel doesn’t offer the kind of uncritical praise Trump expects.

Kimmel called his show’s return to television a pleasant surprise. He emphasized that strong public support was key to the revival, and described the result as an early holiday gift, proving the importance of free speech.

He celebrated the show’s successful return, playfully boasting, “We won, and the President lost! Now I’m back on TV every night, and frankly, I’m giving the world’s most powerful leader exactly what he deserves.” He then joked about using the British slang term “bollocking,” asking if he’d used it correctly.

The broadcast followed immediately after the King’s annual Christmas message. Towards the end, Jimmy Kimmel spoke directly to viewers in Britain, offering an apology for the current political climate in the United States and asking that Americans not be stereotyped as a whole.

He asked the audience for patience, explaining that progress isn’t always immediate. He admitted they were often behind schedule, but asked for their continued support, suggesting they might see results in around three years.

Hi I’m Jimmy Kimmel.

You might not know who I am, but I was chosen to give this year’s Alternative Christmas Message – apparently it’s a pretty big honor! If you don’t recognize me, I host a talk show – what you might call a chat show – mostly in places overseas, though honestly, I’m not really sure what’s happening over there.

As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve been really disturbed by what I’ve seen on screen lately. Honestly, it feels like we’re living in a golden age for stories celebrating authoritarianism and oppression. It’s unsettling how much cinematic content seems to glorify tyranny right now.

You might have seen in the news that the president of my country wants to silence me because I haven’t publicly supported him enough. The American government also threatened my company and me, which led to our broadcast being stopped. But then something unexpected happened – a stroke of luck, even! It was in September, but it felt like a Christmas miracle, and honestly, the holidays seem to come earlier every year.

A huge number of people, even those who didn’t like my show, protested and marched to defend free speech. Because of their support, we were able to bring the show back – and it’s now more popular than ever. We succeeded where the President failed, and I’m back on air every night, frankly telling the world’s most powerful leader exactly what I think of his actions.

I’m sharing this story because it’s easy to assume things like government censorship only happen in countries like Russia or North Korea—not here in the UK. That’s what we believed, but now we have a leader openly suggesting people should be executed. Things can change quickly.

It’s ironic that Americans are so proud of not having a king, considering that’s a major reason we started this country. Earlier this year, millions of people protested with the slogan ‘No Kings,’ and some of you were even there. To be clear, we have no issue with your king personally – his son actually lives here. Our problem is with anyone who tries to act like they’re in charge of us.

Right now, the United States is facing serious challenges to its democratic foundations – from attacks on the press and scientific institutions, to the independence of our courts and even the integrity of the presidency. Things are in a really bad state, and we recognize this is having an impact globally. I want to apologize for that, and to assure you that not everyone in America shares the views or actions of those causing these problems.

I know things haven’t always been smooth between our countries – and I’m thinking of both history and pop culture here! – but we truly value our relationship with you. Speaking for my country (even though I definitely shouldn’t!), our Christmas message is simple: please don’t lose faith in us. We’re facing some challenges right now, but we’ll get through them. We care about you, even the parts of your culture we jokingly tease, like Simon Cowell. Let’s be honest, we’re Americans, and we’re a bit of a mess sometimes!

We know we often seem to be behind schedule, but we usually deliver eventually – give us around three years, if you can. We appreciate your patience, and we’re especially grateful for Spider-Man. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
