Jennifer Lawrence Sparks Debate After Roasting White Men as “So Misunderstood”

Jennifer Lawrence admitted she tends to overshare during interviews, and she’s concerned it often leads to problems. She discussed this while on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Good Hang, where she was promoting her new film, Die My Love. These comments came directly from the podcast conversation.

Lawrence playfully admitted that giving interviews often makes her question her career choices. She feels she should probably do fewer interviews than most actors, suggesting she’d like to cut back to about half the usual amount. She explained that reading her quotes online makes her realize how outlandish they can sound, saying she’s often shocked by what she sees.

She joked about how quickly her offhand comments could be blown out of proportion in the media. As an example, she playfully imagined a headline reading, “Jennifer Lawrence Calls Kourtney Kardashian Annoying.” “It just…takes off!” she said, laughing about how her words often seem to get twisted and exaggerated.

Despite trying to be careful with her words, Jennifer Lawrence unexpectedly made another noteworthy comment during the conversation. When Amy Poehler pointed out Lawrence’s habit of championing other women in Hollywood, Lawrence jokingly replied, “Oh yeah. I do. What do you think… I love white men?”

She playfully pretended to come to their defense, exaggerating with a mock plea: “Oh my god! I wish I could be their champion. They are so misunderstood!” It was a lighthearted moment that unexpectedly transitioned into a more thoughtful conversation about the female directors who had influenced her work.

Jennifer Lawrence credits early collaborations with women as being incredibly impactful for her career. She specifically mentioned Debra Granik’s film, Winter’s Bone, as a pivotal moment that led to her first Academy Award nomination. Lawrence noted, “The very first movie I ever did was directed by a woman.”

Hearing her talk about seeing women directors really resonated with me. She shared that it made her believe she could direct someday, and it was so inspiring! She actually said, ‘I realized it was possible for me to direct, too,’ and that she’d been dreaming about it since she was a teenager. It’s amazing to see someone you admire finally pursuing those long-held goals.

She shared that she’s been proactively preparing to direct by learning on the job from the directors she currently works with. “I always let them know I’m interested, and they include me,” she said. Many have even allowed her to observe the editing and post-production processes.

Lawrence revealed she’s already working on a new project: a comedy she wrote herself. She’s planning to direct it and also star in the film, though she hasn’t shared any details about the plot yet.
