Jennifer Garner is known for being a down-to-earth mom, but she recently revealed her kids aren’t eager to watch her shows. The 53-year-old actress doesn’t anticipate her three children tuning in to her Apple TV+ series, The Last Thing He Told Me, because they find it strange seeing her on screen.
Garner explained that while her kids support her work, they don’t enjoy watching her in dramatic or romantic scenes – it feels like an obligation rather than entertainment. “My kids don’t love to watch me in things,” she admitted.
She pointed out that watching her is different for them than watching another actor. “They do try to be supportive, but I think it’s a little weird to watch your mom kiss someone or cry,” she said, explaining how it feels odd for children to see their parent in those situations.
It’s interesting that Jennifer Garner’s children – Violet, 20, Fin, 17, and Samuel, 13 – don’t seem bothered by watching their father, Ben Affleck, in movies. Garner explained that her kids are okay with it, likely because they don’t share her feelings about it as a mother. She jokingly said they don’t want to see her sad or in romantic roles, and they also don’t like seeing her portray a mother to other actors. Despite this, she did connect with her son, Fin, over the book that the show is based on, written by Laura Dave.
She remembered reading the novel to her child at bedtime, explaining how the story’s fast pace and excitement kept them both reading long after they were supposed to be asleep. The actress was especially struck by the book’s portrayal of different kinds of motherhood, calling it powerful, even though it was difficult for her to play a character who didn’t immediately feel like a natural mother, considering how well-known she is for being a devoted mom.
Season two of The Last Thing He Told Me launched on Apple TV+ on February 20th, taking place five years after the first season’s events. Jennifer Garner and Angourie Rice reprise their roles as Hannah and Bailey, continuing to investigate the disappearance of Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). New episodes are released every Friday until April 10th.
Beyond the mystery genre, Garner is also working on a new romantic comedy for Netflix called One Attempt Remaining. She stars with John Cena as a divorced couple who have to work together to recall a cryptocurrency password worth a fortune. Garner is also producing the film, which is another project with Netflix following the popular Family Switch and The Adam Project.
Jennifer Garner is currently working on a film set in Los Angeles, while her former husband, Ben Affleck, has been thinking about how his movies are viewed by their children. He previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the first film his kids all enjoyed watching together was Armageddon, largely because they found the idea of him playing an astronaut amusingly over-the-top.
