It might sound surprising, but it’s been possible to wash and dry yourself in under 15 minutes for ages – it’s called a shower or bath! While that’s nothing new, there’s always room for improvement in personal hygiene. And in Japan, they’ve rediscovered a wonderfully relaxing way to get clean. Their innovative device, playfully called the “Human Washing Machine,” is actually quite luxurious.
It’s also just as absurd as you think.
A company in Osaka called Science Co. recently revisited a decades-old idea. Back in 1970, Sanyo Electric (now Panasonic) unveiled a “human washing machine” at the Japan World Expo, but it didn’t become popular – likely because people already had showers!
Science Co. reimagined the concept with its new “Human Washing Machine of the Future” – known as Mirai Ningen Sentakuki. It resembles a sleek, futuristic spacecraft, more like an escape pod or fighter jet than a bath. This enclosed pod partially fills with hot water to bathe you, while a gentle mist and tiny bubbles clean your upper body. Sensors monitor your vital signs to ensure your comfort, and soothing music and videos play to help you relax during the wash.
This is completely absurd. It’s an overly complicated and costly device that doesn’t really solve any existing issue – it’s basically a high-tech bathtub with a huge tablet built in.
I absolutely have to try this! It’s a space pod bath that promises total relaxation, with a quick stop for cleanliness along the way. Seeing it makes you want to experience it immediately.
And there’s a real benefit to this ‘Human Washing Machine’ compared to a normal shower or bath: I don’t have to wash a towel afterward! They actually *do* have washing machines, of course. I forgot for a moment.
