The tale of Superman’s beginnings is well-known, tracing back to when he was an infant dispatched from the planet Krypton and eventually evolving into a mighty protector. This narrative shares similarities with that of Batman, who suffered the heartbreaking loss of his parents, and Spider-Man, who encountered a radioactive spider.
However, James Gunn, the newly appointed co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios, intends to adopt a novel strategy for his forthcoming Superman film.
Gunn expressed in an interview with The Times that he has no desire to rehash specific aspects of superhero narratives. He stated, “There are three things I never want to witness in a superhero film again.” These include: the pearls in a back alley during Batman’s parents’ murder, the radioactive spider biting Spider-Man, and baby Kal arriving from Krypton in a small spaceship.
Additionally, he pointed out that occasionally starting a story without delving deeply into a character’s past can be acceptable. After all, we’ve seen countless films where the backstory isn’t fully explored… So what?
In contrast to numerous other adaptations, Gunn’s Superman narrative deviates from delving into his origin story or the acquisition of his powers. Instead, the movie commences with Superman already serving as a hero, and the world is accustomed to the existence of metahumans for centuries.
The opening scene of the film provides a brief summary of the background events using a scroll reminiscent of Star Wars, allowing viewers to grasp the new timeline swiftly.
Apart from discussing various topics, Gunn mentioned the upcoming Batman film titled “The Brave and the Bold“. Instead of portraying the beginnings of his crime-fighting career, this movie will center around a Batman who has already accumulated some fighting experience under his belt.
In simpler terms, this production skips the initial backstory of Bruce Wayne’s parents’ death and instead starts with events already underway. To quote Gunn, “We jump straight into the action… Superman is already established. Lois Lane and Clark Kent are familiar with each other. Lex Luthor dislikes Superman from the get-go, although they haven’t personally met yet.” The narrative unfolds rapidly, plunging viewers directly into the heart of the storyline.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll soon be witnessing the new Superman adventure on the big screen! I’ve got my eyes fixed on David Corenswet, who’s bringing Clark Kent/Superman to life, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult transforming into Lex Luthor. The stellar cast also includes Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced. Mark your calendars for July 11th, when this cinematic spectacle graces the silver screen!
