James Gunn shares intimate insights on the true significance of his upcoming Superman project in a recent chat with The Sunday Times. In this candid conversation, he delves into the core concepts driving the movie, explaining why its message resonates strongly during these current times.
Gunn expressed that fundamentally, the character of Superman revolves around themes of compassion and optimism, especially in periods when such virtues seem scarce. He further elaborated, “Superman is the embodiment of America,” indicating an immigrant who enriched our nation. However, he primarily views Superman as a narrative that underscores the importance of fundamental human kindness, which, unfortunately, we appear to have overlooked in recent times.
He made it clear that different individuals may interpret the movie in various ways. Given our current politically polarized world, Gunn acknowledges that certain viewers might find the message objectionable, but he’s unbothered by this potential reaction.
He explained, “Indeed, it varies in playstyle,” but the underlying theme is “exploring humanity’s compassion.” Some people may find it objectionable merely due to its focus on kindness, but he added, “Let’s disregard those who lack empathy.
In a fresh take on the classic tale, David Corenswet portrays Clark Kent while Rachel Brosnahan dons the role of Lois Lane in the new Superman movie. Gunn hinted that the film tackles political issues but it’s primarily focused on exploring profound questions about righteousness and wrongdoing. According to him, “The story is essentially about their relationship and how contrasting views on fundamental moral principles can strain two individuals’ bond.
In my perspective, am I strictly against killing, as Superman is, or do I strive for balance, like Lois, in my moral compass?
In this adaptation of ‘Superman’, we follow a young Clark Kent as he navigates the challenge of blending his alien heritage with his everyday human existence. While employed as a journalist in Metropolis, he grapples with determining his role within society.
Gunn stated that the timing seems perfect for a tale like this. He explained, “This Superman appears to manifest during periods when people are experiencing a decline in faith in humanity’s kindness.” Furthermore, he shared, “I am narrating a story about an individual who embodies exceptional goodness, which is relevant now because there has been a rise of unkindness due to influential figures being harsh online.
He mentioned that he doesn’t aim for the movie to transform the world. However, if it encourages some people to think more deeply, that would satisfy him. In simpler terms, “He admitted that he doesn’t create films with the intention of altering the world, but if it manages to make a few individuals more considerate, it will bring him joy.
Superman opens in theaters on July 11.
