The long-awaited second season of “Peacemaker” has finally arrived, following a three-year gap. As suggested by the trailers, alternate realities and parallel timelines are key elements this season. However, with the Multiverse Saga unfolding in the MCU, along with the “Spider-Verse” movies and DC’s own “The Flash,” some fans were apprehensive about another Multiverse superhero narrative. Yet, during an interview with Rainn Wilson for Interview Magazine, “Peacemaker” showrunner (and co-head of DC Studios) James Gunn clarified that the show’s second season is not a typical Multiverse story. Instead, he hinted at a different take on the concept. Here’s what he had to share:
In my film enthusiast perspective, I’ve heard some chatter about the multiverse angle feeling overused. However, what we’re diving into isn’t the traditional multiverse concept. Instead, it echoes Philip Roth’s novel, “The Counterlife”, which focuses on a single reflection of our world. As for Superman, that intertwines with the core narrative of the season.
In the realm of Peacemaker, there’s this device called the QUC – Quantum Unfolding Chamber. Remember it from Season 1? It resides in Auggie Smith’s (Robert Patrick) wardrobe, and it’s not just any old portal; it’s a gateway to 99 distinct dimensions. When I say dimensions, I’m not referring to alternate realities. Instead, I’m talking about other dimensions, other realms of existence altogether.
In essence, the dimension that Christopher Smith travels to is similar yet distinct from the Multiverse as we know it. Since it’s an alternate reality of his own, there are shades of a Multiverse, but it seems more like an exception in the grand scheme of the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. For those who recall the ’90s film “Sliding Doors” featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, it bears a striking resemblance. Therefore, don’t anticipate “Peacemaker” season two to spark a significant DCU Multiversal event movie.
It appears James Gunn is employing multiple realities to weave a deeply personal narrative centered around the main character, Christopher Smith. He emphasized that “The story revolves around the character of Christopher Smith. It’s about him encountering another realm, which in essence mirrors his world with subtle variations. These differences seem to be that everything is improved for Peacemaker in this parallel universe. And his counterpart, the other Peacemaker, represents what he yearns for in his own life.” This intriguing angle has us more enthused about Peacemaker than any potential DCU event it could be connected to.
