James Gunn appears uncertain about his future at DC Studios, just as I first told you.
I just saw an interview with the director of Superman on BobaTalks, and he was talking about the future of the DCU. He said he has big plans, but it might not be him actually carrying them out. It’s all happening while Warner Bros. Discovery is potentially being sold, so things are definitely up in the air!

“If I S…” — Gunn Cuts Himself Off
So, I was listening to this interview with James Gunn, and BotaTalks asked him a question I was dying to know the answer to. They wanted to know how far ahead he’s planned out the story for his DC Universe, beyond the Man of Tomorrow movie he’s shooting next year – which, by the way, is also when his contract is up! It’s interesting timing, and makes you wonder how much further he’s mapped things out.
BotaTalks asked how long the current storylines will run. They wanted to know if these arcs will conclude with Man of Tomorrow or if they’ll extend beyond that point.
Gunn: “If I s… Yes, they definitely go significantly further than Man of Tomorrow.”
Gunn appeared to cut himself off before completing the phrase “If I stay,” then continued:
Honestly, whether I’ll be the one to make that happen is still up in the air – life’s complicated, you know? [laughs] But yeah, I’m hoping I can!
This news confirms reports from sources familiar with the situation that James Gunn may be stepping down as co-head of DC Studios in the near future.

Sale of Warner Bros. Discovery Looms
These statements follow reports that Warner Bros. Discovery might be sold soon, with companies like Paramount Global and Skydance reportedly interested in buying it.
Sources familiar with the situation suggest the agreement might be finalized within the next few months, after which all parts of the company – including DC Studios – will be evaluated.
As we’ve mentioned before, James Gunn’s contract with DC ends next year. Currently, there aren’t any live-action DC Universe movies or shows being developed besides a few animated projects, which leaves the fate of his planned ‘Superman Family’ reboot up in the air.
Sources familiar with Warner Bros. Discovery say James Gunn’s DC Universe plans could be changed or even scrapped if the company gets new management.

Gunn’s Uncertain Future
It’s surprising to hear James Gunn sound uncertain, considering how much he’s talked about his long-term vision for DC – the ‘Chapter One: Gods and Monsters’ plan. His comment, delivered with a smile, about ‘whether it’ll be me’ implies he knows his future with the company isn’t completely secure.
Recently, Warner Bros., now led by Mike De Luca, has started to prioritize other projects. For example, they’ve scheduled the release of Minecraft 2 just two weeks after James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, suggesting that DC films aren’t the studio’s main focus anymore.
If the upcoming Man of Tomorrow film doesn’t improve things after the disappointing performance of Superman, James Gunn’s new DC Universe might fail before it really gets started.

What Happens Next
James Gunn is still working on Man of Tomorrow, with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Lanterns, and Clayface all planned for future development.
Since it’s unclear who will lead DCU next and James Gunn is even questioning his own position, the future of the DC Universe seems very unstable.
If Paramount were to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, many believe Mike DeLuca would be the ideal person to lead DC Comics. There’s also a lot of fan interest in bringing back the creative direction previously established by Zack Snyder.
