Back in September 2022, Warner Bros. announced they were making a sequel to the 2005 film Constantine, with Keanu Reeves returning as the lead role. The original director, Frank Lawrence, was also set to return. Even after James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of the new DC Universe, those plans remained in place – Reeves himself confirmed he’d spoken with the new heads about the project. However, over two years later, Constantine 2 still isn’t confirmed. Gunn has said he’s still open to the idea and has discussed it with Reeves, but hasn’t seen a script for the sequel yet.
James Gunn recently shared an update on a potential Constantine 2 during an interview on the BobaTalks podcast (as reported by Deadline). He said he’s had conversations with Keanu Reeves about it, but hasn’t seen any scripts yet.
It’s surprising that a script for Constantine 2 hasn’t been finished yet. Akiva Goldsman, who wrote the original movie and is still producing the sequel, was supposed to write the script in 2022. More recently, director Francis Lawrence said he shared a story outline with James Gunn and received approval to begin writing. Lawrence also stated they were closer than ever to making the sequel. However, despite these conversations and the promising idea, it seems James Gunn won’t approve the project until a script is completed.

A follow-up to Constantine starring Keanu Reeves will likely exist outside of the main DC Universe, under DC’s Elseworlds label. However, considering the success of Peacemaker season two, that’s not a certainty. James Gunn has made it clear he won’t approve any movie until he’s happy with the complete script, aligning with his and Peter Safran’s strategy of only greenlighting projects with fully developed, well-received screenplays.
He hasn’t secured funding for Constantine 2 yet. Without it, the sequel will stay just a concept people discuss.
