James Gunn recently provided a significant update on the future of the DC Universe since unveiling the initial wave of projects, offering fresh insights about 13 upcoming movies and TV series slated for Chapter 1, entitled “Gods and Monsters.” Following the release of his Superman film, it’s evident that DC Studios is only warming up to more exciting ventures.
In a chat on the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz, Gunn disclosed information about 13 prospective DC Universe projects. He shared insights into significant characters such as fresh approaches to Batman and Wonder Woman, in addition to providing updates on projects that have already completed filming.
1. Matt Reeves’ The Batman
Gunn talked about the script for “The Batman 2”, which director Matt Reeves recently gave him. When asked if he enjoyed it, he simply said: “I do like it.” Additionally, he verified that the film remains on schedule for its planned release in October 2027.
He elaborated slightly, stating, “Absolutely, we’re on track. There are still some matters we need to sort out, but overall, we’re moving in the correct path.
2. The Brave and The Bold

Later on, the discussion shifted towards DCU’s forthcoming Batman film titled “The Brave and The Bold”. Horowitz mentioned that the project is currently being scripted. When he inquired if Gunn was keen for both “The Batman 2” and “The Brave and The Bold” to be released in the same year, Gunn replied, “Most likely not. Most likely not within the same calendar year.
In response to being questioned if “The Brave and The Bold” would be the debut of the new DC Universe Batman, Gunn hinted, “I won’t confirm that…” He admitted that casting for the role hasn’t begun yet, but regarding the widely suggested choice of Alan Ritchson as Batman, he stated, “I am a great admirer of Alan Ritchson, both as an actor and personally. So, let’s wait and see what transpires.
Gunn continued by admitting, “Of course, I sometimes ponder it. There are individuals I reflect on, but I’ll wait until the script arrives to decide [the next steps]. It’s not the most advanced project. In fact, we have many projects that are significantly more advanced than The Brave and The Bold.
3. Peacemaker Season 2

Gunn provided insights about the upcoming season 2 of Peacemaker, emphasizing its strong ties with the upcoming Superman film. Set for release in August, here’s what fans can anticipate: “Peacemaker [season] 2 serves as a sequel to Superman. You’ll find several characters from that movie, including Rick Flag, Hawkgirl, Maxwell Lord, and Guy Gardner. It’s the direct continuation of the Superman storyline and promises to be quite explicit.
4. Supergirl

The discussion shifted towards the Supergirl film, particularly after Milly Alcock’s recent introduction as the character. When Lobo was mentioned in relation to Jason Momoa, Gunn immediately showed excitement. He exclaimed, “Lobo is incredibly cool! Jason Momoa is just… Wow!
5. Lanterns

The recent news about Lanterns is encouraging, with Gunn praising it as excellent. Previously, he had hinted that the narrative would primarily revolve around John Stewart’s journey, while Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner will play secondary roles to support this central storyline.
6. Clayface

Gunn additionally provided information about the forthcoming Clayface film, which is almost ready for filming. He characterized it as a full-blown horror movie, stating, “This is a true horror flick. It might resemble a Blumhouse high-budget horror production. However, it’s part of the DC Universe, making it an intriguing concept in my opinion.
So, fans can look forward to a scary, horror-style movie set inside the DC Universe.
7. Untitled Wonder Woman movie

In response to queries about advancements in the latest Wonder Woman script and whether a definitive path has been set for the character, Gunn simply confirmed with a simple “Yes.
After being queried about the upcoming Wonder Woman film, Gunn stated that it will indeed be distinct from the Gal Gadot movies, and he’s currently quite enthusiastic about Wonder Woman.
To put it simply, the upcoming Wonder Woman film is indeed being developed with an innovative twist compared to its predecessors. It’s been hinted that director Gunn and the studio are leaning towards casting a promising television actress, similar to Milly Alcock, opting for fresh faces rather than established Hollywood stars.
8. Flash project

In 2023, The Flash was one of the final movies in the DC Extended Universe before a franchise makeover. Regrettably, it struggled both with critics and financially, largely due to a lackluster plotline and ongoing issues stemming from its lead actor, Ezra Miller.
Even though there have been some challenges, James Gunn mentioned that it’s likely we’ll catch a glimpse of The Flash in the DC Universe within the following two years. After all, this character is among the most renowned and emblematic figures from the world of comics.
9. Aquaman project

Similar to The Flash, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom was among the concluding films in the DC Extended Universe. Unlike The Flash, which drew a lot of criticism, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom didn’t receive as much negative attention. Instead, it performed admirably at the box office, earning the title of the second highest-grossing DCEU movie after the original Aquaman.
Jason Momoa is no longer set to portray Lobo in the DC Universe, similar to how The Flash’s character isn’t expected to appear in a new movie immediately. James Gunn, in his own words, suggests that it might be around the next two years before we see any significant developments for either of those characters (Aquaman and the character portrayed by Jason Momoa).
10. The Authority movie

James Gunn recently discussed the upcoming movie adaptation of “The Authority,” initially announced in January 2023. He candidly acknowledged that the production process hasn’t been smooth sailing, expressing, “Indeed, it’s been quite a bumpy ride.
It was unveiled that the original writer of The Authority has been reassigned to a different DC Universe movie, but no specific title was mentioned. In regards to this, he remarked, “I’ve transferred the writer onto another DCU project that I believe he’s currently excelling at.
In essence, even though The Authority remains under consideration, the team’s advancement has temporarily paused as they shift their focus towards other tasks at hand.
11. Swamp Thing

James Gunn brought up the topic of James Mangold’s Swamp Thing movie in conversation. He shared that they have been in contact with Mangold, but at this point, the script has yet to be submitted. In a joking manner, Gunn implied that Mangold has been occupied with numerous other major productions. However, he emphasized that Swamp Thing remains on their agenda, as they are discussing it once more.
So, the project is still alive but hasn’t moved forward much yet.
12. Sgt. Rock

James Gunn was inquired about the progress of the Sgt. Rock movie, with Daniel Craig potentially involved. When asked if he’s eager for the project to advance, Gunn expressed his strong enthusiasm and stated, “Absolutely, I’m really looking forward to Sgt. Rock.” However, he clarified that the film will no longer be associated with Luca Guadagnino who was previously attached as the director.
Indeed, even though Gunn expresses enthusiasm for Sgt. Rock, it’s important to note that the director has been replaced, and the film remains in production stages at this point.
13. Rumored Mr. Terrific & Jimmy Olsen shows

In the days leading up to the latest Superman movie, The Wall Street Journal disclosed that DC Studios and James Gunn might be mulling over two potential spinoff series. One of these could center around Mr. Terrific, while the other would focus on Jimmy Olsen. Given Edi Gathegi’s well-received portrayal of Mr. Terrific, viewers appear to be quite excited about this possibility. However, Gunn has refrained from making any confirmations, so for now, neither series has been officially announced.
Responding to questions regarding speculated Superman spinoffs, Gunn expressed a sigh of exasperation, hinting he might disclose something before holding back. He then requested, “Let’s focus on the facts that I have openly discussed, rather than internet gossip that can be both fabricated and factual.
All these updates came from Gunn’s appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
