Even with his newest Avatar film still playing in cinemas, James Cameron is already planning for the future of the series. He recently revealed some surprising ideas about where the franchise could go next while promoting ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
Disney has planned release dates for Avatar 4 (2029) and Avatar 5 (2031), but director James Cameron emphasized that these aren’t set in stone. While some scenes for Avatar 4 were filmed alongside the second and third movies, the future of the series ultimately depends on how well those films do at the box office.
James Cameron recently told Entertainment Weekly he’s unsure if there will be more installments in the series, but he’s hoping for them. He added that they’ll continue making them as long as they remain financially successful.
Avatar: Fire and Ash has had a very successful launch, bringing in over $483 million globally in its first week. However, director James Cameron admits he has alternative ideas prepared in case the studio chooses not to make the last two planned movies.
He stated that if plans for projects four and five fall through, he’ll hold a press conference to explain what they were intended to be. He then asked, “Does that sound good?”
As a huge film fan, I just checked out the trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water – it looks incredible! You absolutely have to see it on the big screen when it hits theaters December 16th. Trust me, this is one you don’t want to miss!

Cameron revealed another concept he’s been developing: adapting the Avatar story into a series of novels, which he plans to write himself. He believes the rich history and intricate culture of the Avatar world would translate beautifully to the written word.
He said the characters have a rich history and a lot of carefully considered details. He’s eager to create something with that same level of depth and intricacy.
Cameron acknowledged that fewer people are reading books now compared to the past. He cited a recent study by the University of Florida and University College London, which showed a 40% decrease in reading for pleasure in the U.S. He explained, “There isn’t a sustainable way to make money from it anymore, as people simply aren’t reading as much.” Despite this, he believes preserving complete stories is still valuable.
Avatar: Fire and Ash picks up where the story left off, following Jake Sully and Neytiri as they work to keep their family safe after the events of the previous film. They now encounter a new danger in the form of the Ash People, a fierce Na’vi clan from a volcanic region, and their leader, Varang. The movie features Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, and many other familiar faces from the previous Avatar film.
