As a veteran gamer who’s seen more album releases than I care to remember, I must admit, James Blunt’s latest stunt left me both entertained and slightly nostalgic. The 20-year journey of ‘Back To Bedlam’ is a testament to the power of music and social media in today’s world. The idea of legally changing one’s name based on fan suggestions might seem a bit outlandish, but it’s reminiscent of the public poll that named a research vessel “Boaty McBoatface” back in 2016.
Reflecting on the two decades since I, a fan, first heard James Blunt’s “Back To Bedlam,” it’s astounding to think about its remarkable impact. This album, which has sold over 11 million copies globally, spent an impressive ten weeks atop the UK charts and dominated the international music scene. The success it garnered enabled me, James Blunt, to bid farewell to my career as an Army captain and embrace life as a pop star.
Leading up to the release of a special 20th anniversary edition of “Back to Bedlam,” Blunt announced on social media that he would consider changing his legal name based on fan submissions, provided the album reached the top spot. A variety of suggestions came pouring in, from different names and variations.
Among some I can mention here were Jimmy Spliff, Blames Junt, Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Pop Star Four Chord Song Machinery, along with many others that are less polite. His social media also features a video introducing several of these suggestions and hinting at a potential new name for Blunt.
James Blunt will be happy to miss number one with his latest album re-release
If the 20th Anniversary Edition of Back to Bedlam ranks as number one next Friday, I’ll officially change my name to… [your chosen name] in legal documents.

The most popular suggestion was Blunty McBluntface. For those unaware it repeats a UK trend from a 2016 public poll to name a new scientific research vessel as Boaty McBoatface. However, Blunt has had some good news as far as his name is concerned, even if it might be a slight disappointment too. The album hit the charts at number seven this week. Blunty McBluntface is now discarded to whatever Blunt’s humor and social media jokes get up to next. He remains James Blunt officially, for now anyway.
Remarkably, the album managed to secure a top spot in the charts once more, despite its initial blockbuster success. It’s no surprise that it’s benefited from some strategic public relations moves during this venture. As usual, Blunt has effectively leveraged his social media presence to generate buzz and headlines. His quick-witted posts are always worth a follow, regardless of your feelings towards his music.
Regarding the album, the 20th-anniversary edition has been released across all formats, including a reusable red vinyl variant. This special edition features his popular songs “You’re Beautiful” and “Goodbye My Lover.” Luckily for James Blunt, you can still find it in the ‘B’ section of record stores!
