J.K. Rowling is working to debunk a rumor connecting her to Jeffrey Epstein after her name surfaced in recently released court documents. The documents, made public by the Department of Justice on February 2nd, included an invitation to the 2018 Broadway premiere of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The invitation, which listed Rowling as a host alongside producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, was sent to Epstein even after his prior convictions were known.
When an invitation started spreading online, many people suggested it showed a personal link between the author and the convicted financier. Rowling quickly responded on X, dismissing the claims as ridiculous. She stated she’s never had any contact with the man, and that neither she nor anyone working for her had ever met, spoken to, or invited him to anything.
This is ridiculous. I, and everyone on my team, never had any contact with Jeffrey Epstein – we didn’t meet him, communicate with him, or invite him to anything.

The released documents included a message from someone trying to connect with the author of Harry Potter through Epstein. This person believed Epstein had connections to influential figures in various fields and asked for his help arranging a meeting. However, the files don’t show any evidence that Epstein ever made that connection happen, or that J.K. Rowling knew about the attempt.
Experts say simply being listed in the Epstein files doesn’t mean someone did anything wrong or was close to him. In the world of Broadway and similar events, publicity firms and show organizers routinely send invitations to many famous and influential people. J.K. Rowling’s team explains that any invitation Epstein may have received was likely part of a large, standard mailing process, not a personal message from Rowling herself.
Despite continued discussion about her personal beliefs and connections, J.K. Rowling is still heavily involved in expanding the Harry Potter universe. Production of the eagerly awaited Harry Potter television series is now underway and is expected to debut on HBO and Max in early 2027. Rowling is an executive producer on the show and is reportedly collaborating closely with showrunner Francesca Gardiner to make sure the series stays true to the seven original books.
The show is generating a lot of buzz after revealing its new cast. John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, and Paapa Essiedu will be Severus Snape. Joining them are Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall and Nick Frost as Hagrid. The roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger will be played by newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton, respectively.
Although the new television series is her main project, the stage play The Cursed Child remains popular in both the US and the UK. The Broadway show, currently playing at the Lyric Theatre, has announced that Tom Felton – known for playing Draco Malfoy in the original movies – will return to the role as the adult Draco Malfoy this fall, continuing through May.
