For quite some time, Henry Cavill embodied the character of Superman within the DC Universe, leaving a lasting impression on both viewers and enthusiasts alike. However, it’s now David Corenswet stepping into the cape, as he takes over the role in the latest Superman production under the guidance of director James Gunn.
After the premiere of the Corenswet-Rachel Brosnahan production, the joint head of DC shared details about Cavill’s response to the recasting decision. During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the director disclosed that Cavill handled the news with utmost grace, referring to him as “absolutely a gentleman.
James Gunn reveals Henry Cavill’s reaction to recasting of Superman
Earlier, it was disclosed that Gunn and Peter Safran chose Corenswet to play the superhero due to their preference for a visually youthful Superman.
During the chat in the podcast, the director openly admitted that assuming the role of co-head at DC Studios was quite a challenge for him. He put it this way: “It’s really tough, surprising as it may seem, but on the day we were contemplating whether to accept the position at DC Studios.
The filmmaker also mentioned, “On the day the agreement was finalized, all of a sudden they were proclaiming Henry’s return. I was taken aback, thinking, ‘What’s happening? We knew the plan – he was supposed to join us for Superman. It seemed unfair to him and quite disappointing.
In a different part of their conversation with the podcast host, Gunn disclosed that Cavill accepted the news of being replaced as Superman quite gracefully. The DC executive stated, “He was nothing but courteous and a wonderful individual throughout.
The director went on to say, “He mentioned, ‘I’d prefer to disclose it myself rather than you all doing it.’ To which I replied, ‘What a gracious gesture!’
Will Henry Cavill and James Gunn work together in the future?
Despite David Corenswet receiving praise for his portrayal of Superman, replacing Henry Cavill, director James Gunn suggested a potential collaboration between the two. Gunn mentioned, “We discussed it on that day. I’d be thrilled to include Henry in a project.
Regarding the recently released movie on July 11th, it kick-starts the “Gods and Demons” era within the DC Universe as Superman.
