According to reports from various trade sources, James Gunn’s Superman movie is expected to soar to approximately $400 million at the box office this weekend.
What are the box office estimates?
The movie is expected to stay at the top spot for two consecutive weeks, with projected earnings of approximately $55 million. This would represent a significant decrease of around 56% from its initial opening weekend earnings of $125 million, which is on the higher end of expectations. Some reports have suggested a drop as low as 40-50%, but given it’s still early, there’s a chance Superman could outperform these predictions once again.
With the addition of $55 million, the domestic box office now stands roughly at $232.8 million. If Superman manages to reach $400 million by Sunday, it would imply an international gross of approximately $167.2 million.

The question is: are those good numbers?
It seems accurate to express that the global box office figures aren’t doing exceptionally well, as currently, the domestic share stands at about 58%, while the international share accounts for approximately 42%. Typically, it’s not a positive trend when the domestic earnings significantly outweigh the foreign ones.
Compared to Minecraft, which earned $955.1M with a breakdown of 44.4% domestic and 55.6% foreign, Lilo & Stitch, surpassing a billion dollars, follows a similar pattern with 41.6% coming from domestic sales and the remaining 58.4% from foreign markets.
I think it’s also fair to say Superman won’t come close to a billion.
Superman vs. The Batman
Let’s examine the movie “The Batman”. It earned 47.8% of its total gross domestically and 52.2% abroad. The film raked in $369,345,583 domestically and $402,900,000 overseas, resulting in a global total of $772,245,583. If Gunn’s new Man of Steel manages to achieve this, it would be quite remarkable, in my opinion, given the current circumstances.
Following its second weekend, “The Batman” showed comparable earnings to initial predictions for “Superman,” grossing approximately $239 million domestically. Remarkably, “The Batman” surpassed the $400 million mark by its second Saturday. The film experienced a minimal 51% drop in its second weekend, earning $65.2 million. Interestingly, Gunn’s “Superman” has been performing better than “The Batman” during weekdays, but not on weekends.
On its second Wednesday, The Batman had surpassed the $500 million milestone, earning $258.3 million domestically and $247.5 million overseas. I predict that Gunn’s Superman may reach that domestic total by Wednesday of next week, but its international performance seems to be sluggish for now.
In China, where Superman seems to have failed spectacularly, The Batman earned an impressive $25.3M. Meanwhile, both Superman and other films in Asia are struggling, with Superman even falling out of the top 10 in China by Friday.

No Sequel for Superman? Déjà Vu of Man of Steel
Let’s find out if Superman can match The Batman’s speed, but with lower international ticket sales and China withdrawing its support, Superman might not be able to surpass The Batman as much. However, earning $400 million in just two weeks is nothing to scoff at.
As a movie enthusiast, I must admit my disappointment in learning that there won’t be a sequel to the recent reinterpretation of Superman. The narrative arc and audience response reminded me quite a bit of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, with similar levels of excitement followed by a box office decline. Instead of witnessing the continuation of that storyline in Man of Steel 2, we were treated to Batman vs Superman – a film we all remember didn’t exactly live up to expectations.
