IKEA’s Housewarming Party Dished Up More Than Just Swedish Meatballs

IKEA has been building anticipation for its new Oxford Street store by organizing various events throughout London. Last November, they put up their famous blue bag on the soon-to-be storefront and later opened a Hus of FRAKTA pop-up shop. Now, the Swedish furniture company is hosting a string of cozy housewarming gatherings in smaller city locations.

The event series, titled as such for a reason, sought to challenge conventional notions of home and explore how the younger demographic perceives community, enjoyment, and most significantly, sense of belonging, amidst escalating living expenses. In partnership with music events agency Lab54, IKEA leveraged its collection of furniture products destined for their upcoming store, transforming five unconventional sites into temporary homes for an exclusive pop-up party.

Notably, an exceptional occurrence transpired at a popular kebab takeaway in east London over the weekend. Renowned for its delicious Turkish dishes, the establishment decided to mix things up by offering music performances from upcoming DJs rather than food. To celebrate this unexpected party, the vendor set out a sofa bed and a welcome mat outside, effectively transforming it into an impromptu relaxation spot amidst the rave. Inside, the DJ booth was strategically positioned behind the counter, illuminated by floor lamps and string lights above the decks.

Starting at 7 pm, the venue started emptying out as people flocked in, greeted by beats of house and bass from Shift K3y. Not much time passed before the dance floor filled up, and attendees received blue FRAKTA bag-made bucket hats to wear. Later on, DJ TeeDee jumped onto the decks, drawing even more people from the street into the party. In keeping with IKEA tradition, the night concluded with a serving of meatballs for all those leaving the festivities.
