‘Ignorant Suits Her’: Megyn Kelly Fires at Ellen DeGeneres’ Controversial Statement

Political and cultural disagreements in the U.S. are often played out publicly, even among celebrities. The recent disagreement between Megyn Kelly and Ellen DeGeneres is a good example of this trend.

I was really struck by Kelly’s strong reaction to Ellen DeGeneres’ comments about the tragic shooting in Minnesota. It all stems from the death of Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman who was killed by federal immigration officers just recently, and it’s clearly a very sensitive issue that Kelly feels strongly about.

On the January 19th episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, Kelly criticized Ellen DeGeneres for offering her opinions on a national issue while living abroad. Kelly jokingly asked her audience if they were wondering what DeGeneres’s perspective was, then quickly pointed out that DeGeneres no longer lives in the United States.

I was really surprised to hear Kelly talking about Ellen DeGeneres moving to the U.K.! She framed it as if Ellen left the US, which is a strong way to put it. Then, Kelly immediately went on the attack, bringing up all the bad press about the toxic environment on Ellen’s talk show. She basically said the show got cancelled in 2022 because of how Ellen behaved behind the scenes – a pretty harsh assessment, honestly.

Kelly reported that the woman allegedly bullied those with less authority. She shared a story she heard from someone connected to the production: a producer was reportedly told that if their sister worked for the woman, they weren’t allowed to make eye contact with her while passing by. Kelly stated she had a reliable source for this information.

Kelly criticized Ellen DeGeneres for expressing sympathy towards the protesters in Minneapolis. Kelly claimed DeGeneres was “totally fine with” what she called the “so-called protesters [and] terrorists” and argued that this position wasn’t simply a matter of being misinformed, but a deliberate attempt to mislead people.

Kelly criticized actress Ellen DeGeneres, calling her “ignorant” for trusting information she claimed came from CNN. Kelly strongly defended her opinion, stating that DeGeneres wasn’t simply misinformed, but deliberately choosing to believe things that aligned with her own beliefs. Kelly finished by criticizing DeGeneres and sarcastically wishing her well in England.

The discussion followed a statement Ellen DeGeneres made on January 18th. She shared her sadness and outrage over the death of Renee Good, who was fatally shot by an ICE officer on January 7th while participating in a protest from her car. DeGeneres posted on social media, saying, “I’m so sad, and so angry, and so worried.”

Ellen DeGeneres shared a statement from the victim’s wife, Becca Good, adding to the demands for justice. The shooting has sparked a heated debate, with some defending the officers’ actions as self-defense and others arguing the use of force was unnecessary. However, DeGeneres faced immediate criticism for her show of support, with many pointing out that she often doesn’t speak out about other similar events.

People online questioned why she hadn’t commented on the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which happened last fall. One commenter wrote, “You should be disappointed in yourself because you only seem to support causes when it suits you.” Others criticized her, saying she was a hypocrite for publicly grieving some people but not others.

I saw a comment asking if people were as upset about a supposed attack on Charlie Kirk as they were about other recent events. Another person chimed in, saying they wished there was the same kind of recognition and respect given to him as well. They felt like everyone deserves to be honored, not just the people certain groups choose to highlight, because we’re all human beings with families.

For nineteen years, from 2003 to 2022, Ellen DeGeneres was a hugely popular daytime TV host with The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The show was famous for its celebrity guests, playful pranks, and fun games, and it won many Daytime Emmy Awards. However, its positive image was destroyed after a 2020 BuzzFeed News investigation revealed accusations of a toxic work environment, including racism, inappropriate behavior, and bullying by the show’s producers.

After her show ended, Ellen DeGeneres stepped back from public life. She did a stand-up comedy tour called Ellen’s Last Stand… Up, which became a special on Netflix. In it, she talked about feeling like she was unfairly pushed out of the entertainment industry because of accusations of being unkind. She and her wife, Portia de Rossi, then sold their homes in California and moved to the Cotswolds in England.

After leaving Fox News and NBC, Megyn Kelly has become a leading figure in independent media. Her podcast and radio show, The Megyn Kelly Show on SiriusXM, consistently ranks among the most popular news programs. She’s known for her direct and challenging interview approach, and isn’t afraid to question common beliefs about culture and politics.

I’ve noticed Kelly often speaks out against what she sees as Hollywood’s out-of-touch attitude, and Ellen DeGeneres seems to get a lot of her criticism. It really shows how split we are these days in what media we choose to consume. And with everything still unfolding around the shooting in Minneapolis, I expect a lot of public figures will keep using it as a jumping-off point to talk about bigger problems in our society.

We’d like to know what you think: should celebrities who move away from the U.S. still share their opinions on American politics, or should they stay silent?
