Ice Spice opens up about her beef with Latto for the first time

As a long-time gamer and hip-hop music enthusiast, I’ve witnessed my fair share of beefs and rivalries within the rap community. However, none have piqued my interest quite like the one between Latto and Ice Spice that unfolded in the first half of 2024.

During the initial part of 2024, there was extensive debate in hip-hop circles about Drake’s feuds with several rappers, namely Rick Ross, Future, Metro Boomin, A$AP Rocky, and most notably, Kendrick Lamar, against whom he engaged in a notable dispute.

Another point of contention, less openly addressed than the feud with Drake and Kendrick, appeared to be simmering between Latto and Ice Spice. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Ice spoke about this unexplained discord.

Previously, signs of friction between the two women emerged in the spring of 2023 when allegations arose that Latto had copied Ice’s EP cover. In a social media post, Latto expressed her displeasure by saying, “I don’t appreciate how you all twist my tweets to fit your weak narratives.” At the time, rumors of a feud between the rappers were merely speculation, but things would escalate shortly thereafter.

When Ice released her EP with the title “Like..?”, she included two tracks that appeared to be responding to Latto’s hit single “Put It on da Floor.” In the first track, “Butterfly Ku,” Ice rapped, “Where is she? On the floor / She’s earning money, but I make even more.” In the second track, “How High?”, Ice seemed to take a dig at Latto once again, rhyming, “Now she’s on the floor when I break down the door / Why are you upset I do less when you have to do more?”

Where she at? On the floor / She gettin’ money, but I’m gettin’ more.

Later, it was Latto’s chance to throw a subtle insult in response, which she executed on Offset’s track “Fine As Can Be.” By referencing Ice’s popular song “Munch (Feelin’ U)” in her lyrics. However, the most evident indication that these two artists were engaging in a feud emerged when Ice released her single titled “Think U The S**t (Fart)?” and mentioned Latto’s hit track “Put It on da Floor” once more. In her rap, Ice boasted, “I have them under my heel, I can’t ease up / She’s lying there, told her to rise.”

If there’s anything noteworthy about Latto, it’s her ability to excel in competition. After all, she emerged victorious in the first season of Lifetime’s “The Rap Game,” a platform where musicians face off against one another. Consequently, she responded with her track “Sunday Service.” “I believe I’m the best, lady, and I acknowledge it / Jesus strolled on water, my ice is simmering hot.”

Jesus walked on water, I got Ice boilin,’ though.

Rappers’ supporters joined in the feud, reacting when Ice advertised his track “Think U the S**t (Fart)” in Atlanta, Latto’s hometown, with a promotional truck. In retaliation, fans of Latto defaced it by scrawling her album title, “777,” and the phrase “Stream Sunday Service.”

After that incident, tensions between the women remained under the surface. However, they flared up again in June of this year when Latto received a cake with a poop emoji design from her friends. This gift was an intentional nod to Ice’s hit song “Think U The S**t (Fart).” Following this, Latto made history as the first female artist to headline Birthday Bash ATL, an event organized by Hot 107.9 radio station.

In her interview with Rolling Stone, Ice discussed the cake issue and criticized Atlanta-born rapper Latto for prolonging their feud without necessity. She also downplayed the significance of her ongoing disagreement with Latto. These remarks follow Latto’s statements to Billboard earlier this month, where she questioned Ice’s lyrical abilities in a potential rap battle between them.

Ice shared his perspective: “If we ever discussed this with her and I inquired about her concerns, I believe her response would be as if she hadn’t understood the question at all. It seems there isn’t even an issue worth addressing, not for me at least. I get that friendly rivalries exist, but this situation feels prolonged and no longer amusing. ‘Think U the S**t,’ a phrase from January, is still being referenced.”

She went on, “You’ll share a less-than-impressive cake picture to announce positive news about yourself? It’s almost flattering in a way since you’re turning an enjoyable experience for you into a focus on me… once more.”

Moving forward, it’s uncertain what will happen next with the beef between these two women. Perhaps they’ll resolve their dispute and collaborate on a song instead. Time will tell.
