Prior to its grand debut at NYCxDesign, Herman Miller has revealed the New Mexico collection, a set of two distinctive items inspired by the friendship that blossomed among Herman Miller designers Alexander Girard, Charles and Ray Eames, and painter Georgia O’Keeffe in the Southwestern state. The first piece to be introduced is a side table designed by Alexander Girard, while a special edition of the Eames Wire Chair follows suit. These two exclusive items were initially placed in O’Keeffe’s former Abiquiú residence by the Herman Miller designers in the 1950s.
The Eames Wire Chair Low Base, originally custom-made by the Eames duo, comprises an ergonomic molded fiberglass chair supported by a low wire base. As per Herman Miller, the artist expressed her appreciation for this piece in a note, stating, “I appreciate it because it is compact yet comfy.” Interestingly, O’Keeffe’s unique design didn’t make it to Herman Miller’s product range until recently, with only 300 pieces available. The chair’s upholstered seat showcases a delicate vertical stripe in shades of yellow and tan, mirroring the color scheme of New Mexico’s beautiful landscapes.
In other areas, a table designed by Girard, featuring his iconic snake motif, is noticeably showcased. This table, boasting a white enamel surface and a coiled black snake sculpted onto the steel base, rests on slender aluminum legs that splay outwards. While the snake symbol appears across various items within O’Keeffe’s residence, the introduction of this table represents Herman Miller’s initial production of the piece. The limited run of Girard Snake tables consists of only 100 pieces.
The Herman Miller New Mexico series will debut in North America on May 20th, with its Japanese launch scheduled for the latter part of May.
