Here’s a schedule of new releases this week (October 13th to 19th). For each title, you’ll find the release date, a quick summary of the story, information about the actors and creators, and dates you can easily add to your calendar.

‘The Cabin in the Woods’ (2012)

This new horror movie, releasing on October 16th, blends genres to tell the story of five college friends on a weekend getaway to a secluded cabin. Their trip takes a terrifying turn when they unknowingly trigger a series of events orchestrated by people working in a secret underground facility. The film focuses on Dana, Curt, Jules, Marty, and Holden—classic character types whose decisions are being controlled as part of a mysterious and larger plan.

Drew Goddard makes his directorial debut with this film, which he co-wrote with Joss Whedon. The movie features a cast including Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, and Bradley Whitford. Joss Whedon also produced the film, with Peter Deming handling the cinematography, Lisa Lassek editing, and David Julyan composing the music.

’40 Acres’ (2025)

This thrilling post-apocalyptic story begins on October 17th, following a family fiercely protecting their family farm in the Canadian countryside. As dangers mount, they must fight to survive, and their history plays a key role in their determination. The story focuses on Hailey Freeman, who must rise to the challenge and lead her family to safety.

R. T. Thorne wrote and directed the new film, collaborating with Glenn Taylor on the screenplay. Danielle Deadwyler, Michael Greyeyes, and Kataem O’Connor lead the cast, supported by Milcania Diaz-Rojas and Leenah Robinson. Jeremy Benning was the cinematographer, and Todor Kobakov composed the music. Hungry Eyes Film & Television produced the film, with Jennifer Holness at the helm. It will be released on Friday, October 17th.

‘What Happens Later’ (2023)

This charming play, opening on Friday, October 17th, centers around Willa and Bill, ex-lovers unexpectedly reunited during a flight delay. Stranded in an airport overnight due to snow, they’re forced to confront their shared history and what might have been. Most of the story takes place in the airport as they finally address lingering issues from their past.

I’m really excited about Meg Ryan’s directorial debut! She not only directed it, but co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Dietz and Kirk Lynn – it’s actually based on one of Dietz’s plays. Meg Ryan herself stars as Willa, alongside David Duchovny as Bill. It’s a beautiful film to look at, thanks to Bartosz Nalazek’s cinematography, and Jason Gourson did a fantastic job with the editing. The music, composed by David Boman, really adds to the atmosphere. It’s coming out this Friday, October 17th, and I’ve already marked my calendar!

‘Brittany Murphy: An ID Mystery’ (2020)

This documentary, debuting on Saturday, October 18th, takes a fresh look at the events surrounding Brittany Murphy’s death. It combines interviews, old footage, and investigative work to re-examine the unanswered questions and the stories that developed after her passing. The program carefully reviews the timeline of events to understand what happened.

The special, directed by Bryan Gildner, features interviews with journalists and commentators, along with historical footage of Brittney Murphy and people who knew her. It aims to give viewers a clear understanding of the facts and the different stories that emerged after her death. It will debut on Saturday, October 18th.
