The popular HBO show “Big Little Lies” is now advancing towards its much-anticipated third season. Writer Francesca Sloane, known for her work on the movie “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”, has been enlisted to pen the first episode and will also assume the role of executive producer. Alongside Sloane, series creator David E. Kelley, as well as stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, will continue their involvement in the production.
As a cinephile excitedly following industry news, I’ve learned that Sloane has inked a two-year contract with HBO – an overall deal that includes her involvement in the show we all love!
Sloane recently switched to HBO, having previously been contracted to Amazon MGM Studios since 2020. While there, she collaborated with Donald Glover on the creation of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”.
In the role of both executive producer and showrunner, she took charge of the series that had earlier encountered setbacks. Her recruitment implies that Season 3 is now picking up speed, following years of ambiguity.
According to Casey Bloys, who serves as the Chairman and CEO of Content for HBO and HBO Max, the network had been holding off on a third season until Liane Moriarty’s sequel book became available. Now that Sloane has joined the project, it seems that production plans are advancing.
The television series “Big Little Lies” premiered on HBO from 2017 to 2019 and was adapted from Liane Moriarty’s 2014 novel of the same name. Created by David E. Kelley, the show was initially promoted as a limited series but expanded to consist of two seasons and 14 episodes in total. Jean-Marc Vallée directed Season 1, while Andrea Arnold took charge for Season 2. In 2023, Nicole Kidman revealed that there are plans for a third season.
The production of the show has encountered issues off camera. It was reported by IndieWire in 2019 that Andrea Arnold lost creative oversight during the editing process of Season 2, allowing Vallée to take charge and harmonize the distinctive styles of each episode.
Casey Bloys, HBO’s programming president, cleared up some confusion about the creative process, stating, “There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about this topic. Generally speaking, directors don’t have complete creative control.” He further explained that Vallée came back to refine the episodes following a request from the production team, which included Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.
Fans of Big Little Lies can look forward with anticipation as Francesca Sloane has joined the team to write and executive produce, suggesting that the series may soon resume production.
