After a brief hiatus and some changes, HBO Max has returned under its original name! Yes, you heard it right – as of July 9, 2025, HBO Max is back in the streaming game, courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery. The service initially launched in 2020, but went through a couple of name changes before reclaiming its original identity. In 2023, it was known as “Max,” but now, the iconic “HBO” moniker is back. Some fans were disappointed when HBO dropped from the name, but the decision-makers have recognized the importance of maintaining a strong and recognizable brand identity rather than trying to be all things to all people without a clear direction. So, welcome back, HBO Max! It’s as if you never left us.
Daenerys Targaryen softly says, ‘It’s time to go home,’ in the trailer that marks HBO’s comeback, showcasing clips from shows such as ‘The Last of Us’, ‘White Lotus’, ‘House of the Dragon’, and more… However, at the moment, the entire description continues to refer to the streaming service as “Max.
It seems like this identity dilemma might take some time to resolve, but in essence, “home” appears to be referring to HBO Max, the platform where Game of Thrones first found its streaming home. It’s quite a heartfelt tribute to HBO Max. Admittedly, we didn’t feel too emotional about it, but Max has always left us puzzled. Reversing decisions that seem illogical is generally a positive move.
The decision to revert HBO Max’s name back to HBO Max may indicate a more streamlined strategy for the streaming service, potentially offering higher-quality, thoughtfully crafted programming that viewers will appreciate. For now, there are no adjustments in subscription fees or content offerings following this name change. However, it’s essential to stay vigilant because sometimes a name change can also imply price alterations.

As we said, welcome to our screens, HBO Max, for the second and hopefully last time.
