Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey carry on with the heart-pounding tale of Joel and Ellie as they make their way through a progressively menacing world filled with monsters and brutality in the upcoming season two of HBO’s The Last of Us. In preparation for the second season, the streaming giant has unveiled the official trailer for the Emmy-winning series, set to premiere next month.
In the second season, we find ourselves five years after the events of the previous one, with a chilling trailer hinting at the hardships and strains that both Pascal’s Joel and Ramsey’s Ellie will encounter. The trailer depicts Ellie cautiously moving through deserted structures, suggesting danger lurking close by as debris lies scattered on the ground and a feral dog emerges before transitioning to a shot of a man’s wristwatch and another scene of a graveyard filled with crosses made of thin wood, each adorned with a medallion. Joel is portrayed alongside Ellie as they traverse a forest, where he expresses concern for her well-being by asking, “Are you alright?” Flashbacks to Joel in a house in Jackson, Wyoming, a place he has resided with Ellie since the end of the first season, are also shown. Here, he is seen holding his brother Tommy’s son, Benjamin on his lap and telling him, “This is where we live.” He then indicates to a map, which piques Benjamin’s curiosity as he asks, “What’s behind that fence?” Joel replies, “People,” while scenes of Joel and Ellie playing the guitar and dancing with Dina (played by Isabella Merced) are displayed. When his nephew queries, “What’s outside?”, Joel responds, “Monsters.” Scenes of someone using a scythe, W.L.F. tanks and soldiers, a new adversary Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) struggling through snow, along with clips of monsters and explosions outside the Jackson settlement, offer a glimpse into what we can expect in the upcoming season.
The preview is jam-packed with action, featuring intense gunfire, individuals darting through forests with flaming torches, Ellie exploring yet another deserted structure alongside a new character named Jessie (portrayed by Young Mazino), and Ellie sharing a kiss with Dina while showing Joel a tattoo. It seems that Joel and Ellie are engaged in their own struggle, depicted in a tense standoff, which appears to be the climactic moment of the trailer. Ellie accuses Joel of breaking his word, as indicated by her statement, “You promised.” The second season premieres on April 13.
