Has The Party Made a HUGE Mistake In Their Plan to Defeat Vecna on STRANGER THINGS 5, Volume 2

The final episodes of Stranger Things 5 reveal the Party thinks they have a solid plan to beat Vecna, but we at TopMob see a major flaw that the show doesn’t explain. This oversight could cost them the battle – and even their lives. The Upside Down is frozen in time from the night Eleven opened the gate, meaning Dr. Brenner’s tank should still be there, just as it was when she first connected with Vecna. However, there’s a problem: there’s no water in the Upside Down. How can Eleven boost her powers enough to defeat Vecna without it? It looks like the Party’s plan has a serious weakness.

There Is No Water in the Upside Down

You might not have noticed, but the show Stranger Things consistently demonstrates that the Upside Down doesn’t have any water. This is first shown in season one when Barb is pulled into the Upside Down version of Steve Harrington’s pool – which is completely empty. The Upside Down doesn’t seem to hold onto water from our world. Just like the pool, Dr. Brenner’s water-filled chamber is empty in the Upside Down. So far, that’s how Stranger Things has presented it.

Interestingly, Stranger Things really emphasizes that the Upside Down lacks water. In Season 4, Steve enters a gate to this alternate dimension through a watery portal in Lovers’ Lake – a spot connected to a tragic drowning. Because Steve is the best swimmer, he investigates, but once he’s pulled into the Upside Down, it’s clear there’s no water there at all, neither natural nor artificial. The show consistently highlights this key difference between our world and the Upside Down.

Not One Person Brings Up This Mistake In Their Plan to Defeat Vecna in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2

Even if water does exist in the Upside Down, as seen in Stranger Things, the characters (and we, the audience) don’t know that for sure. So, when they’re carefully planning their last fight with Vecna, it seems like a huge problem that no one considers whether there’s enough water to fill Eleven’s tank for her powers. The fact that this isn’t mentioned feels like a significant mistake.

We Do Not See the Party Bringing Water Into the Upside Down on Their Way to Defeat Vecna

As a storytelling principle, shows often demonstrate things rather than just telling us. So, do we actually see the characters in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, packing water to take with them to the Upside Down, considering it’s consistently shown to be a dry place? We do see them gathering supplies as they prepare for their final battle with Vecna, but surprisingly, no water is included. Given how much they might need, it’s a noticeable omission.

Will Not Considering the Lack of Water in the Upside Down Cost Our Heroes?

Because Eleven couldn’t fill her sensory deprivation tank with water in the Upside Down, her powers weren’t fully boosted when fighting Vecna. Since Vecna was already powerful in his own dimension and trying to merge worlds, Eleven desperately needed every advantage she could get.

Things are uncertain, to say the least. We’ll just have to wait and see how the final episode of Stranger Things wraps things up when it airs.

The final season of Stranger Things is now available on Netflix. Volumes 1 and 2 are streaming now, and the concluding volume, titled either Stranger Things 5: Volume 3 or Stranger Things 5: The Finale, will be released on December 31st at 5 PM Pacific Time / 8 PM Eastern Time.

Rotem Rusak, who leads the editorial team at TopMob, believes The Party made a significant mistake. She also admits she simply liked a photo of Steve Harrington from Stranger Things season four.
