The Harry Potter reboot continues to reveal new cast members, and fans have reason to be excited.
Redandian Intelligence reports that Jake Curran will play Ronan, a centaur character who didn’t appear in the first *Harry Potter* movie, *Sorcerer’s Stone*.
In the books, Ronan is a close friend to both Firenze and the centaur Bane, who are known for their fiery temperaments. He first encounters Hagrid while looking into the mysterious death of a unicorn.
In the 2001 film, the character Ronan was cut entirely, with only Firenze remaining. If actor Bill Curran is cast in the role, it might fix a long-standing problem with the original movie.
Though Ronan isn’t a frequent character, he’s crucial in several key scenes. He defends Hermione, Ron, and Harry during their visit with Grawp, rallies the centaurs to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts (a moment left out of the films), and foretells the coming war with the repeated warning, “Mars is bright.” This prediction foreshadows the dangers Hogwarts will face and explains why Firenze later becomes a Divination teacher.
A particularly exciting part of casting Brendan Curran is the potential for better-looking centaurs in the film. The centaur scenes in the first movie, *Sorcerer’s Stone*, received criticism for having dark and unrealistic special effects, which made it difficult to follow the action.
Curran looks a lot like Ronan, except he’s fully human. His appearance suggests the upcoming movie might finally feature believable and well-done centaur effects.
This change indicates the new films will bring back characters that were left out before and improve the special effects, which haven’t held up well over time. Viewers can likely look forward to seeing magical creatures from Hogwarts look more accurate to the books and much more impressive – this could be a major highlight of the reboot.
