Just before being honored for his conservation work at Chicago’s Field Museum, Harrison Ford publicly criticized President Donald Trump in an interview with The Guardian.
The actor, famous for his work in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, spoke out against Donald Trump’s approach to climate change and the weakening of environmental regulations.
Ford expressed deep concern about Donald Trump, stating he operates based on impulse rather than established policies. He described Trump’s behavior as frightening, citing ignorance, arrogance, dishonesty, and betrayal. Ford believes Trump is aware of the harm he’s causing but is motivated by personal financial gain while the world suffers, leading him to consider Trump one of history’s greatest criminals.
Ford’s comments followed a recent speech by Trump at the United Nations, where he labeled climate change “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world.” He urged countries to prioritize traditional energy and strong borders as keys to success.
During his presidency, Trump weakened environmental regulations, stopped progress on renewable energy, promoted oil and gas drilling, dismissed numerous scientists, and limited government discussion about climate change and pollution.
For decades, Ford has been warning about the dangers of climate change. He recently stated, “I’ve been talking about this for 30 years, and everything we predicted has come true. It’s frustrating that this isn’t enough to motivate people to change, likely because of existing systems and habits.”
Although critical of Trump’s dishonesty, Ford expressed hope for the future and what people can achieve. She believes his support is declining because of his lies, and she’s confident that we can address climate change by changing habits, developing new technologies, and focusing on putting effective policies into practice.
We need to believe in our ability to change and approach challenges with both determination and smart thinking. Humans are remarkably good at adapting and coming up with new solutions, and we can often overcome problems if we focus our efforts on them.
