The idea of free speech has long been a topic of discussion. In the U.S., it’s been a core principle we’ve continually tested. Occasionally, someone says something controversial, but others often step in to defend their right to express it, even if they disagree with the message.
Live music can be a form of expression, and at the 2025 Riot Fest, the band Gwar put on a particularly striking performance. An actor portraying Donald Trump was ‘attacked’ on stage by another performer dressed as an alien, adding a political and theatrical element to their show.
So, when Gwar did that thing, a lot of Trump fans got really mad and started saying they’d stop supporting the band. Honestly, if you’re just finding out about Gwar now because of this, they probably weren’t your kind of band anyway – they definitely wouldn’t lose sleep over a boycott!
Gwar get pushback for a recent performance at Riot Fest
A Twitter user who openly supports right-wing views claimed that the band Gwar was attempting to encourage political violence. They characterized the band as being aligned with the Democratic party and asserted that people on the left often support violence.
Someone shared a quick clip of Gwar’s performance, which likely just amplified the attention it received. If you didn’t attend Riot Fest, you would have missed it entirely. However, thanks to that person sharing the video, you can now see what happened.
The problem with immediately criticizing someone or something is that you often don’t have the full story. Usually, there’s more to the situation than meets the eye, and people haven’t bothered to investigate what actually happened.
Gwar is known for its outrageous stage shows where performers act out violent scenarios, often targeting political figures. Recently, they’ve focused on Trump, but in the past year, they simulated decapitating a Joe Biden character and, in 2015, they had a performer attack a Hillary Clinton character during a show.
While Gwar often touches on political themes, it’s hard to pinpoint their actual political stance. We can’t assume anything about their beliefs just because they pretend to attack politicians during their shows.
Gwar’s performances are definitely not for everyone, and they don’t aim to be. In fact, if something they do bothers you, they’ve kind of succeeded. Just so you know, Gwar members dress as aliens and call themselves the Scumdogs of the Universe – don’t take it all too seriously!
