Ever since Simone Griffith joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy a few seasons back, there have been notable yet scarce similarities between her and Meredith Grey. It’s important to note that Simone is an independent, multi-faceted character who wasn’t intended to mirror Meredith in every aspect. However, they do share some parallels – a resemblance that feels fitting, perhaps even more so now than before.
As a movie reviewer, I found myself deeply moved by the character of Simone in this heart-wrenching film. Similar to Meredith, Simone juggles the demanding role of a surgical resident with the challenging task of caring for a beloved family member afflicted by Alzheimer’s. The disease takes its toll swiftly, leaving Simone struggling to maintain balance.
However, it is Meredith’s empathy that offers Simone solace during these trying times. As Simone embarks on the difficult journey of transferring her grandmother to a 24-hour care facility, she finds strength in Meredith’s understanding and compassion for her situation. This emotional bond between two strong women adds depth and authenticity to their characters, making this film a must-watch for anyone seeking a powerful story about love, family, and resilience.
Similar to Meredith, Simone is a committed and rising star in the field of surgery, striving to make her mark in a challenging and prejudiced professional landscape. However, unlike Meredith who benefits from her white background, wealthy parentage, and connections, Simone’s journey is significantly more intricate and captivating. In the mid-2020s, she was dismissed from her residency program and grapples with the heavy burden of being a Black woman in the medical field of surgery.
The show intentionally constructed a similar situation for these two characters: Simone, finding herself in a rebound relationship that later becomes a professional one at the hospital (a co-worker), mirrors Meredith’s past predicament of sleeping with a superior who was also her husband-to-be. Although this plot device may seem less problematic, it remains just as intriguing. While Meredith wasn’t aware that the man she slept with was her future hospital superior, Simone and Lucas were already separated when they found themselves in an unexpected predicament. Despite not being at fault, Simone is now entangled in a potential love triangle that could lead to unpleasant consequences.
Among all the surprising events in last week’s finale, this one was relatively tame. However, with Season 22 fast approaching, it feels more necessary than ever. Simone isn’t a replacement for Meredith Grey, but she provides a fresh, contemporary take on one of the show’s most iconic and heartbreaking love stories. It’s also worth noting that Lucas is Derek Shepherd’s nephew, which gives their connection an extra poignant touch. The relationship between Meredith and Derek had its blissful moments, but their happiness was tragically cut short. Maybe Simone and Lucas, unlike many other couples on this show, will experience the lasting, fairy-tale ending that Meredith and Derek never did.
If Simone ends up with Lucas instead of that other man, who could potentially turn out to be wonderful, then Grey’s Anatomy, known for revisiting old narratives and giving them a fresh twist, might just tell a new and positive story this time around.
