Grey’s Anatomy recap: Bad surgeons and baseball

This recap contains spoilers for Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, episode 14 “Love in the Ice Age.”

Upon reaching the grand rounds, Simone learns that the acclaimed surgeon Bailey has invited is none other than the one responsible for her dismissal from her initial residency program. Despite Simone’s mistrust towards Dr. Chase due to his past behavior, Bailey is preoccupied with the doctor’s impressive accomplishments. In a joint effort, they participate in an experimental surgery to excise an incurable tumor. However, once Chase acknowledges the futility of the operation, he departs. After ejecting Chase from the operating room for abandoning the patient, Bailey concocts a plan that could potentially save the day. The strategy proves successful, and she and Weber, who also harbored doubts about Chase, share a significant moment, underlining the resilience of some friendships. Simone eventually confronts Chase as he leaves, ultimately finding resolution regarding the tumultuous conclusion of her first residency program.

In an attempt to persuade Catherine to repeat his intern year, Lucas enthusiastically finds himself working under Dr. Weber. However, Dr. Weber remains skeptical that Catherine will change her mind. Yet, after they spend the day revisiting old surgical recordings together, Dr. Weber consents to discuss Lucas’s future prospects with Catherine.

In contrast, Ben finds himself serving under Teddy once more. Throughout the day, he’s immersed in routine chores, even when they tackle a critical case alongside Owen and Jules. It isn’t until the patient’s condition deteriorates critically that Teddy summons him to perform CPR on the patient. At the end of the day, he confronts Teddy, confessing that his efforts have been focused on fulfilling his role as an intern and doing a good job. However, he requests her to evaluate his future in the program if she feels his hard work, despite his errors, is not sufficient.

Blue is struggling emotionally after breaking up with Molly and finding solace in work. However, Link perceives the pain hidden beneath his professional demeanor as an intern. In a swap arranged by Link, Winston offers to take on Blue’s responsibilities temporarily, providing free tickets to a baseball game as an incentive. Despite being uncertain, Blue agrees when told they could potentially save their patient’s leg. During the operation, it is revealed that the patient delayed surgery to scatter his brother’s ashes in various locations globally. The team successfully saves the leg and the patient’s life. Moved by the man’s sorrow, Blue assists him in finding ways to explore the world during recovery. In a gesture of camaraderie, Link gives his baseball ticket to Blue, causing some disappointment for Winston.

In a dramatic situation involving an ice pick incident (let’s not delve into that), Teddy and Owen find themselves grappling with issues concerning their open marriage. It turns out that Teddy desires only Owen, which he reciprocates. However, she’s upset because he had been with someone else, despite the nature of their relationship. When their patient’s heart refuses to restart, Teddy remains resilient, mirroring her determination to save their marriage. But Owen insists they should let go of the patient. Afterward, the patient incident still weighs heavily on Teddy, but upon returning home, she finds Owen there, assuring her that everything will be alright.

Is it, though? I’m not convinced. But I’m just a bystander. What do I know?
