At its first investor presentation in New York, IMAX announced that Greta Gerwig is directing a new film adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew for Netflix.
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond recently discussed initial footage from the film, and NarniaWeb reported on his comments.
Gelfond explained that Gerwig’s take on Narnia will be quite different from previous versions, both visually and musically. Rather than a traditional fantasy feel, the film will have a contemporary vibe with a strong rock and roll sound.
The filmmakers are aiming for a soundtrack similar to the music of bands like Pink Floyd and The Doors. Mark Ronson, who previously collaborated with the director on the film Barbie, is composing the score.
At the event, Gelfond explained to investors that this retelling of the Narnia story is being updated for modern audiences. He emphasized that it’s a fresh take, stating, “This isn’t the Narnia your parents or grandparents remember. The music is very current and will appeal to IMAX viewers.” He also noted that the film is planned as a major release for both IMAX theaters and Netflix.
While some movie theaters are hesitant to show the film due to disagreements with IMAX, Gelfond is confident that audiences will be impressed by Greta Gerwig’s work and the project will still be a success.
He believes the film is truly groundbreaking and could have a major impact on culture. He was so enthusiastic about it that his team actually had to restrain him, as he was eager to share his excitement.
Filming started earlier in the year, and the production team has built sets to look like London in the 1950s. This indicates that director Greta Gerwig has updated the story’s timeline from the original book by C.S. Lewis, which was set in an earlier period.
The movie centers around Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, the main characters from the book. Emma Mackey and Daniel Craig are involved in the production, with Craig playing the role of Uncle Andrew. Carey Mulligan is reportedly being considered for a part, and Meryl Streep is anticipated to provide the voice for Aslan. However, Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed any of these actors yet.
