For nine years, Grant Gustin portrayed Barry Allen in “The Flash,” and he’s open to donning the red suit again, but only if it’s for James Gunn’s new DC Universe project.
At FAN EXPO Denver, during a Q&A session with the cast of “The Flash”, a spectator posed an intriguing query: if director James Gunn extended an offer for a role in the DC Universe, who would he prefer to portray? Without hesitation, Gustin succinctly responded, “Flay”, emphasizing his preference for the character he already plays. This single word response ignited discussions among fans.
If given the chance by James Gunn in the DC Universe, whom would I prefer to portray? I’d go for the Flash! 🏃♂️🌪️

Over the course of 184 episodes, the actor portrayed the swift character, thereby making “The Flash” the longest-running show within the Arrowverse. This series concluded in May 2023, and for many fans, the depiction of the character by Gustin remains their preferred version.
At the moment, it seems that DC doesn’t have any fresh Flash projects in development. James Gunn, who oversees DC Studios now, stated back in December 2024 that there were no plans for a Flash movie underway. Therefore, even if Gustin is open to returning, nothing has been set in motion as of yet.
He discussed the topic further with The Wrap. Gustin mentioned that he and Gunn have conversed before, but not specifically about reviving The Flash. As he clarified, “We’ve never talked about The Flash. We’ve just spoken casually, and I’m a big Superman fan. I’ve always been one, ever since I was a child. So I’m really thrilled about the movie. And I’m excited about David being cast.
He’s discussing the forthcoming Superman film by James Gunn, featuring David Corenswet as the main character. Previously, there have been messages between them, but Gustin and Gunn have not yet had a face-to-face encounter.
From a film enthusiast’s perspective, I’m left wondering whether The Flash will make an appearance in James Gunn’s DC Universe in the near future. Given the divided response to the most recent live-action adaptation, it seems that DC might be pausing before reintroducing their speediest hero.
Despite everything, Gustin’s affection for the character remains robust. Should an appropriate opportunity arise, especially if it includes Gunn, he appears eager to take on the role once more.
