
Actor Tchéky Karyo, famous for roles in movies like ‘La Femme Nikita’ and ‘GoldenEye‘, has died at age 72. Born in Turkey and raised in Paris, Karyo passed away on Friday after fighting cancer, according to AFP. His wife, Valérie Keruzoré, and their children confirmed the news.
Tchéky Karyo worked as an actor for almost forty years, becoming well-known for his memorable supporting roles in movies and, later, on television. He first stood out in the 1982 crime thriller La Balance, and gained wider recognition as Bob in Luc Besson’s Nikita in 1990.
Tchéky Karyo became well-known to BBC viewers for his role in the series The Missing, which first aired in 2014. He played French detective Julien Baptiste in the first season, investigating the disappearance of a young boy, and returned to the same role in 2016 for the second season, which centered on a missing girl in Germany. Both seasons were critically acclaimed, and Karyo’s performance was particularly praised. He later reprised his role in the spin-off series Baptiste on BBC One in 2019.

He began his career on stage before transitioning to film, where he received a César Award nomination for Most Promising Actor for his role in La Balance.
Throughout his career, Tchéky Karyo acted in many films, including notable roles in ‘Joan of Arc’ (1993), ‘A Very Long Engagement’ (2004), ‘1492: Conquest of Paradise’ (1992) directed by Ridley Scott, and the James Bond movie ‘GoldenEye’ (1995). He also famously played Nostradamus in the 1994 film of the same name. Even in smaller parts, like his appearance in ‘Amélie’ (2001), Karyo consistently delivered memorable performances.
