Godzilla is set to dominate pop culture in 2026! Fans can see him in the current season of the streaming series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and the Japanese Godzilla will be back in theaters with Godzilla Minus Zero. But that’s not all – the King of the Monsters is even taking on Shakespeare! A new comic, Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla, written by Adam Tierney and illustrated by Sean Peacock, reimagines the classic play with Godzilla taking center stage (mostly through roaring and stomping, we assume!). This is part of Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theater, a four-issue series from IDW Publishing that places the Atomic Lizard into famous literary works. You can get a sneak peek at the first seven pages of Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla below.

We absolutely love how well Godzilla is integrated into the setting of Shakespeare’s Verona in the first few pages of this comic! The artwork is stunning and really captivating. If you’re ready to learn more, here’s the official description for Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla, to go with the preview we’re sharing. It promises a wildly fun twist on a classic story.
Get ready for another wild ride! The popular series that mixes classic literature with Godzilla is back, and this time, the monster is crashing into the world’s most famous stories. It all starts with Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet – imagine feuding families, a blossoming romance, and Godzilla wreaking havoc in beautiful Verona! Things are about to get chaotic.
Sean Peacock, the artist behind Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla, shared these thoughts about the unique project.
I can’t wait for readers to experience this story! Drawing this book was incredibly enjoyable, especially the pages featuring Automatazilla – our steampunk version of Mechagodzilla. Those were some of the most fun I’ve ever had working on a comic, and I hope readers enjoy it as much as we enjoyed creating it.
Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla is a fresh take on Shakespeare’s classic play, but with giant monsters and explosive action! This story combines the familiar themes of feuding families and young love with massive destruction in the city of Verona. Each issue also features a five-page bonus story by Tom Scioli, beginning with Robin Hood and the Monster of Nottingham. Fans are hoping this series will eventually adapt other Shakespearean plays into monster-filled adventures, perhaps even a kaiju-themed version of Much Ado About Nothing!
Get Your Claws on Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla Today: Pre-Order Ends Soon
Okay, so IDW is releasing something wonderfully weird on April 8th: Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla! Yes, you read that right. If you’re intrigued – and honestly, who wouldn’t be? – you need to pre-order by this Monday, March 2nd. Seriously, don’t wait! It’s the Bard meets the Beast, and I, for one, am hoping Godzilla gets a happier ending than those star-crossed lovers. Let’s just say I’m rooting for a sunset sail-off for our favorite giant lizard.
