GloRilla gets praised for removing ‘insensitive’ word from new song after backlash

As a gamer who has been around for quite some time and seen the evolution of hip-hop, I have to say that it’s fascinating to witness the rise of new talent in the industry. GloRilla is one such artist making waves, and her recent controversy over the use of the R-word serves as an excellent example of how the genre continues to evolve.

Approximately a week past, GloRilla shared a sneak peek of a new track on social platforms, which ignited many reactions. While some responses expressed enthusiasm about the preview, others expressed disapproval over the Memphis rapper’s usage of a derogatory term often associated with intellectual disability (the R-word).

“H*, you must not know what you started / Me and my b****h r******d,” Glo says in the song.

“Why are we still using the R-word in 2024? I can’t get with this one,” someone wrote when The Neighborhood Talk posted the snippet. “Folks trip about that word fr, but I understand cause it really is a slur fr,” another person weighed in.

Conversely, some individuals argued that they were unaware the term “R-word” was considered offensive and even criticized younger generations for being excessively sensitive. However, as the discussion intensified, GloRilla chose to act proactively by substituting the word. Subsequently, she shared another excerpt with the revised lyric.

In the revised version, she raps, “H*, it seems you’re unaware of what you’ve set in motion / My behavior and I are getting a little mischievous.”

Many individuals commended Glo for modifying the offensive term in his work, with messages like “Your maturity is evident by replacing the R-word in your song, showing you listen to criticism and respond accordingly,” or simply “I appreciate how you replaced the offensive word in your track.” Another message read, “You didn’t offend me personally, but your thoughtfulness is admirable.”

To put it simply, the song snippet suggests that GloRilla is consistently producing popular music, as evidenced by the positive feedback from her fans about the track. In just this year, she has released a successful single “Yeah Glo!”, a well-liked mixtape titled “Ehhthang Ehhthang“, and another hit single “TGIF”. All these releases have significantly boosted her popularity compared to previous years.

To put it another way, GloRilla is one of the leading female rappers who have been generating significant buzz lately, alongside artists such as Ice Spice, Sexyy Red, and Latto, to mention a few notable examples.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d put it like this: “Hey there, I gotta give it up to Uncle Luke from 2 Live Crew – he’s been singing praises about the incredible strides made by women in rap. He even claims to have laid the foundation for today’s female emcees and feels it’s only fair that he gets his due recognition.”

In a video, Luke expressed his thoughts, saying, “Currently, female rap is outshining male rap, I apologize.” He further added, “I’m expecting these talented ladies to compensate me… I’m particularly waiting for Ice Spice and Sexyy Red to send me some royalties. Ice Spice with her sensational moves of shaking her rear like it’s sizzling hot, and Sexyy Red – well, Red’s my pal.”

“All the f******g girls, Megan Thee Stallion, anybody that’s running around shaking their a***s, talking about p***y and d**k on the record, y’all need to send me a check,” he continued. “Just stop by with the check and say, ‘Thank you, Uncle Luke, for fighting, going to the Supreme Court, allowing us to be able to say what we saying on the records, and we’re whooping these men’s a***s right now ’cause we doing our thing.””

You can see the rest of Luke’s message above, as well as GloRilla’s song snippets.
