Cipher Mining, they call it. Sounds like something out of a spy novel, doesn’t it? They mostly dig up digital coins right now, but they’re hoping to sell electricity to the people who make the robots think. Amazon, naturally, is involved. A fifteen-year lease for five and a half billion dollars. It’s a lot of money, even for Amazon. So it goes.
They’ve got a pipeline of power, three and a half gigawatts worth. Most of it’s just… waiting. Like a lot of us. They’re hoping tech companies will rent it. It’s a good plan, if the tech companies keep needing power. And if the sun doesn’t explode.
They Used to Dig for Bitcoin
The digital coins aren’t doing badly, all things considered. Revenue almost tripled. Still losing money, though. Thirty-seven point six million lost this quarter. Less than last year, which is… progress, I suppose. It’s like being less sick. Still sick, just… less.
They also hoard Bitcoin. One hundred seventy million dollars worth. Most miners sell it right away. These folks are gamblers, or optimists. Or maybe they just think the paper money will be worthless soon. Bitcoin’s been twitchy lately, of course. It always is. A rally would be nice, but don’t hold your breath.
The crypto stuff is just a sideshow, really. It’s the robots that matter. The AI. That’s where the real money will be. If there is a real money, that is.
More Power, More Promises
They bought a new site in Ohio. Two hundred megawatts. Will be ready in 2027. More waiting. It’s good they’re not just stuck in Texas, though. Diversification, they call it. Like having more than one exit from a burning building.
The Amazon deal is interesting. They don’t need the power right now. They’ll start getting it in 2026. Rent starts flowing in August. It’s a slow burn, this whole thing. A very slow burn.
2028 is the big year. Two and a half gigawatts coming online. That’s a lot of electricity. Enough to power a small city. Or a lot of robots. It’s all just energy, in the end. And energy tends to get used. One way or another.
They say the AI market will grow thirty point six percent a year. That’s a big number. It means people expect a lot of robots. And a lot of power to run them. If the robots don’t decide they don’t need us anymore, that is. So it goes.
