Mamoru Oshii is a highly respected anime director, famous worldwide. Even if his only credit was directing the groundbreaking 1995 film Ghost in the Shell, he’d be well-known. He’s also directed other beloved classics like Angel’s Egg and Patlabor. However, many Western audiences aren’t familiar with his live-action films. Before Ghost in the Shell, Oshii co-wrote and directed a series of unusual science fiction movies called The Kerberos Saga. The first film in that series, The Red Spectacles from 1987, has been remastered in 4K and will premiere at Metrograph in New York City on November 21st.

For decades, the 1987 black-and-white film was nearly impossible to see, available only through blurry online copies. That changed when director Oshii launched a successful crowdfunding campaign last year to restore the film, titled The Red Spectacles. The campaign quickly exceeded its initial goal of ten million yen on the very first day. Now, after premiering at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles last month, these upcoming screenings will finally give American audiences a chance to see the film as the director originally envisioned it.
When it first came out, the movie wasn’t a hit, largely because of its unusual mix of silliness, political themes, and deep questions about life. The story centers on Koichi Todome (played by Shigeru Chiba), a former police officer who used to be part of a tough, now-disbanded unit called the Kerberos Panzer Cops. He returns to Tokyo hoping to see his old friends, but finds a city that’s become bizarre and unsettling. He’s haunted by fragmented memories and a growing sense of surreal confusion that seems to overwhelm him.
Even if this movie isn’t for everyone, it’s still worth watching to experience the director’s original, unfiltered idea. Those who enjoy unusual films will likely find this one particularly interesting, and I’m really excited to see it.
