However, and this is a big ‘however,’ enjoying it isn’t exactly straightforward. Watching it openly there carries some very real risks, which is a sad commentary on the current climate.

I’ve been hearing so much buzz about this show – it’s incredible how popular it’s become in Russia! It’s a story about two hockey players, Ilya and Shane, who are rivals on the ice but have a secret relationship off of it. What’s really amazing is that it’s become a hit despite the restrictions on LGBTQ+ content there – it’s clearly spreading by word of mouth, which is fantastic to see.

The popular show Heated Rivalry isn’t available on legitimate streaming services in Russia, forcing fans to find episodes on unofficial websites and apps like Telegram. Dedicated fan groups, some with over 45,000 members, quickly share episodes with Russian subtitles as soon as they come out in the United States. However, watching LGBTQ+ content can be risky in Russia, as one fan told NBC News: “It’s a gamble. You might be fine, or you could face a fine or even jail time. That’s what’s so frightening.”

The danger arises from Russia’s harsh laws. In 2023, the Russian Supreme Court classified LGBTQ groups as extremist, and participating in their activities could result in up to 12 years in prison. Even showing LGBTQ symbols, like a rainbow flag, could lead to arrest, with penalties increasing for repeat offenses.

Coming Out, an advocacy organization, has documented 17 active criminal cases in Russia connected to what authorities are calling LGBTQ extremism. Recently, Russian officials have also been investigating streaming service managers, accusing them of promoting LGBTQ content.

Even though there are risks, fans are still finding clever ways to show their support for the show. For example, a 26-year-old woman in Moscow has created a small display in her apartment honoring the show’s characters. Others are wearing clothes with hockey or classic Soviet cartoon references that subtly connect to the series, or sharing ice-skating videos using the show’s music. One male fan shared that his clothing is a direct nod to the show, saying, “If they’ve seen ‘Heated Rivalry,’ they’ll immediately understand.”

The show is being celebrated for its realistic portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships and its intimate scenes. For many Russian viewers, watching it has been a powerful, yet unsettling, experience. One woman explained it felt like doing something illegal, a form of resistance. Another fan shared that the show offered a glimpse of a different reality, one where expressing affection – like kissing a partner in public – isn’t possible in Russia.

Brands are carefully getting involved, offering products that suggest the show without explicitly mentioning it. For Russia’s LGBTQ+ community, the series has fostered a feeling of togetherness, even though it’s pushing fans to connect in secret. As one 22-year-old fan put it, “It’s still happening, but it’s now hidden from view.”

Heated Rivalry demonstrates the power of art to inspire strong feelings and build communities, even when facing strict rules. Despite the risks, people are openly celebrating love and expressing who they are, showing that compelling stories can connect people across countries and cultures, even where they’re not allowed.
