Fox Greenlights Straight-to-Series Reboot of Iconic Lifeguard Show

Fox is bringing back *Baywatch* with a brand new version of the classic lifeguard drama. The show will skip the pilot phase and go straight to being made as a full series.

The show will return for a new season during the 2026-2027 TV season, featuring 12 episodes. Fox Entertainment announced the series will be co-produced by Fremantle.

According to Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, the original ‘Baywatch’ series was incredibly influential, capturing the spirit of beach culture and making lifeguards pop culture icons.

Get ready for a new ‘Baywatch’! Fox and Fremantle are teaming up to revive the iconic series, bringing it to a new audience. With the help of creator Matt Nix and original co-creator Greg Bonann, this updated version promises fresh storylines, new actors, and all the excitement that made ‘Baywatch’ a worldwide hit.

Matt Nix will lead the reboot as showrunner and executive producer. Joining him as executive producers are the original creators of the series – Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, and Doug Schwartz – as well as Dante Di Loreto.

Since 2018, Fremantle has been exploring a new version of the show, including its iconic red swimsuits. In 2024, Fox officially signed on to the project, committing to a script and potential future seasons.

According to Christian Vesper, CEO of global drama at Fremantle, ‘Baywatch’ is a valuable and well-known show, remaining a television icon worldwide.

We’re thrilled to be working with Fox to continue the show’s success. With Matt Nix leading the creative team, we’re confident in delivering a compelling and fun series. We want to welcome back longtime fans and also introduce this iconic world to a new audience.

The original *Baywatch* television series ran from 1989 to 1999, showcasing the lives of lifeguards working on the beaches of Los Angeles and Hawaii. Although it was initially canceled by NBC after just one season, it became incredibly popular around the world through reruns, eventually reaching an audience of over 1.1 billion viewers each week and becoming one of the most-watched shows ever.

David Hasselhoff led the cast of the show, which also featured a changing group of actors like Pamela Anderson, Alexandra Paul, and Yasmine Bleeth. A spin-off series called *Baywatch Nights* aired from 1995 to 1997, and a movie based on the show came out in 2017.

The new reboot doesn’t have any cast members announced yet. According to Fox and Fremantle, the series will tell new stories with new characters, but still pay tribute to the original show.
