As someone who grew up in the heart of the 90s music scene, let me tell you about four bands that deserve more love than they got. These aren’t just names you’ve heard; these are bands you need to listen to with an open heart and mind.
The 1990s are largely remembered for the emergence of grunge, which is acceptable given its quality and the numerous treasures it produced. However, contrary to popular belief, the end of the decade saw an effort to free radio from Seattle-based bands, but unfortunately, the resulting music was not as good.
There could be some bands that you’ve only passed by on your musical journey so far. While you may be familiar with the ones listed below, have you truly given them a good listen? One of these groups is even quicker and more rebellious in spirit than any grunge band out there.
Different individuals make up this group. Two of them have a close friendship (namely John McCrea and Ben Folds). One possesses an exceptional talent for English language expression. Regrettably, they’re all receiving less recognition than they deserve and should be given more attention.
Four rock bands from the 1990s that deserve more love
The Verve
Skip past “Bitter Sweet Symphony,” it’s a good tune, but it’s become a bit too familiar due to frequent play. The album (“Urban Hymns”) where it resides, though, is brimming with hidden treasures like “Sonnet.” One of the band’s less recognized tracks is “Velvet Morning” – take a moment to unwind and appreciate life’s simple pleasures.
Some enthusiasts argue that A Northern Soul outshines others, and they could be right. However, it’s up to you to make that call after giving both records a good listen. Both albums, along with their early releases, are worth multiple replays. The blend of Richard Ashcroft’s voice with the slightly psychedelic sound creates an absolute masterpiece.
Bikini Kill
Hardcore and abrasive riot grrrl music that is exceedingly well-done and massively influential? Yes, please. But do you know why this is the case? Because the songs are worth it. Well beyond the most popular track, “Rebel Girl,” the original foursome churned out a bunch of winners including “New Radio.” Some fantastic tunes cannot be printed here because they contain “bad” words.
The entire collection of the band was created during the 1990s. They reunited for a tour a while back, and it was fantastic as expected. However, nothing quite recaptures the enthusiasm of the early years when the band seemed not to care about anyone’s opinion, even though the “uncool” kids considered them excellent. That’s all that truly matters.
Ben Folds Five
Ben Folds, along with his two companions (the “five” being a humorous reference), are known for one track that has been played excessively, titled “Brick.” Despite the overly sincere delivery of the song, it isn’t entirely unpleasant to listen to. This is due to the fact that Folds doesn’t compose bad songs as a rule.
Apart from having no interest in joining a pop group, he found the tune “Brick” rather pop-like. However, what definitely isn’t? “Battle of Who Could Care Less.” If you’ve ever experienced a break-up, give this song a listen. It may stir up some old, painful emotions laced with anger. The track is quite therapeutic.
What really makes the band special is the deeper tracks. Real Ben Folds Five fans know those are the ones that get stuck in your head. The entire Whatever and Ever Amen is a must-listen.
Cake
Despite being played frequently, “The Distance” never lost its appeal due to its distinctiveness, much like the band itself, which underwent several lineup shifts. However, John McCrea and Vince DiFiore were constant members, serving as the heart of Cake, making this continuity a wonderful aspect.
Let’s delve into the group’s second album, titled “Fashion Nugget“. This album is one you won’t want to skip, unless there’s an issue with your hearing (which we can assure you isn’t the case). The third album, “Prolonging the Magic“, follows closely and you’ll find it quite satisfying.
