If you’re looking for some energetic music, how about the vibrant and spirited sounds of brass instruments? I’m not referring to the soft, mellow tones often associated with traditional brass bands, which have a unique charm and can certainly give a distinctive flavor to a piece. However, today we’re talking about something more dynamic and lively.

Instead of the lively brass bands that play music you can’t help but move to, at the very least, these feature brass instruments like trumpets, cornets, trombones, and their variants as the main focus, rather than just as occasional additions or backup. To clarify, here are some examples of this style in the following list.

You’ll notice that this list doesn’t include numerous bands who incorporate brass into their tunes. Instead, it carries a distinct New Orleans vibe, and many of the tracks feature reworked covers of classic songs that have been transformed into something extraordinary. Cover versions can be disappointing if they don’t offer anything new or different from the original, but the ones on this list are far from that.

They’ve taken the velvety smoothness of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” and given it a gritty twist, making it a perfect anthem for any party or dance floor. No BS! Brass Band – “Take On Me”

As a die-hard music enthusiast, I find myself captivated by this band that may call Richmond, Virginia home, but their spirit echoes the soulful melodies of New Orleans. Just like the Hot 8 Brass Band, they breathe life into classic covers with their unique touch. They’ve taken on A-ha’s iconic hit “Take On Me,” giving it a fresh twist that is rawer and rougher than the original, yet in an exceptional way that makes it a delightful change of pace from the original. It’s a stunning reinterpretation of a timeless tune, leaving me eager to hear more from these talented musicians.

Old Dirty Brasstards – “Wonderwall”

It’s time for a UK band to demonstrate their ability to put a unique spin on things. This ensemble of ten musicians has given the Oasis classic “Wonderwall” a funky makeover, and it’s a brilliant adaptation with its bold brass arrangement and reinterpretation. Whether the Gallaghers would appreciate this version is debatable, as they might not always see eye to eye. However, I find this rendition to be an exceptional take on a song that has been covered extensively by numerous artists.

Brassft Punk – “Around The World”

Instead of the usual interpretation, Brassft Punk represents an innovative spin on some Daft Punk songs. Created by sound producer Earl Scioneaux III, also recognized as The Madd Wikkid, this brief project blended his cherished New Orleans brass sounds with a few tracks originally by Daft Punk. This particular rendition is impressive due to its catchy, almost hypnotic lyrics intertwining with the lively brass melody that takes center stage. It’s undoubtedly an intelligent reinterpretation of the original song.

Pigbag – “Papa’s Got A Brand New Pigbag”

This unique melody stands apart from the rest, sharing the same exceptional quality, yet maintaining its distinctiveness. Notably, British post-punk group Pigbag gained fame through composing this original piece instead of replicating someone else’s work. This track is a bold, brassy, and infectious anthem, with powerful brass melodies and catchy hooks. It exudes a jazzy, funky vibe and boasts a powerful drum rhythm. Every time you listen to it, it brings a burst of lively joy.
