Emily Carey, who played young Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon, is venturing into the realm of superhero characters. Her first appearance as a superheroine was at the conclusion of Gunn’s Superman film, hinting at upcoming developments within the DC Extended Universe.

During an interview, Gunn described the new Supergirl as significantly distinct from Superman. He stated, “She’s a wreck, absolutely,” emphasizing that unlike Superman, who had a loving and healthy upbringing, Supergirl has faced a much tougher journey due to her contrasting background. Consequently, she is not like her cousin in many ways.

The upcoming movie titled “Supergirl” will delve into the life of Kara Zor-El and her more somber narrative. As per Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios, the film is helmed by director Craig Gillespie, with Ana Nogueira penning the script. Alongside Alcock, the cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham.

In a new adventure, Supergirl, accompanied by her canine companion Krypto, departs from the ruins of her home planet to embark on a space voyage. During their travels, they encounter a young girl named Ruthye, sparking a journey that some have deemed risky and vengeful in nature.

The background of her character will significantly influence the mood of the movie. Unlike Superman, who was nurtured in a caring environment on Earth, Kara experienced the destruction of Krypton as part of her upbringing. This resulted in a more stern and distant portrayal of the Kryptonian hero. Gunn depicted her as having a “spunky demeanor with a strong attitude.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that I, too, am looking forward to seeing Jason Momoa take on the role of the formidable alien bounty hunter Lobo in the upcoming movie! Additionally, it’s fantastic news that Krypto, our beloved super-dog, will be making a comeback, having made his debut in the Superman film. Can’t wait to witness these iconic characters grace the silver screen together!

For quite some time now, a Supergirl film has been under production. As far back as 2018, there were plans by DC to produce a Supergirl movie within their original DC Universe. However, it was Sasha Calle who portrayed Supergirl in the 2023 release of The Flash.

However, everything shifted dramatically when Gunn and Peter Safran assumed control over DC Studios in 2022. They declared a new beginning, planning to release a fresh Supergirl movie in 2023 initially titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, inspired by the comic series penned by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Later on, the film decided to forego the subtitle.

The movie’s production kicked off in January 2025 and wrapped up by May. Various scenes were captured in London, Scotland, and at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Currently, it’s going through post-production before making its grand debut.

DC Studios has officially announced that Supergirl will make her big-screen debut in U.S. cinemas on June 26, 2026. This movie is slated to kick off Chapter One of the freshly minted DC Universe, titled “Gods and Monsters.

Using Milly Alcock’s innovative portrayal of Kara, and a more ominous narrative, the upcoming Supergirl film appears set to offer an entirely new perspective in contrast to what fans usually anticipate within the realm of the Superman universe.
