Fans of 1970s classic rock have three special releases coming up but with a caveat

Over the next month or two, some extraordinary box sets and special editions are on their way. Three of these, in particular, are likely to delight fans of 1970s classic rock. These releases are especially enticing for enthusiasts who appreciate exclusive live performances, reimagined songs, or improved sound quality compared to the initial release.

The unique characteristics of these new sets should attract a broader spectrum of rock music enthusiasts. This is equally applicable to the three distinct artists featured, two of whom are renowned global music sensations. However, it’s important to be aware that one of the releases carries a strong warning.

Below, I’ll provide further details, but for now, let’s express enthusiasm for the March release of a unique edition of Venus And Mars by Paul McCartney and Wings. Additionally, anticipation builds for an assortment of previously unreleased material and live sessions at BBC from Wishbone Ash. Some enthusiasts might be thrilled by the first of these special three releases, which is scheduled to drop on March 14, courtesy of Roger Waters. This is another grand boxed set collection!

Three special releases for 1970s classic rock fans

Wings – Venus and Mars half-speed master

50 years ago, Paul McCartney and his group Wings put out the album “Venus And Mars.” It was their fourth studio release and offered an impressive blend of songs and music from the band. I can still recall purchasing it – one of my earliest album buys – thanks to the extra funds I earned from my weekend job at the time.

The album was released right before Wings embarked on their spectacular “Wings Over The World” tour, incorporating songs like “Listen To What The Man Said” and “Letting Go” into their performance. I was thrilled to catch the energetic “Rock Show” and the lively, cheerful vibe of “Magneto And Titanium Man” during the concert as well.

To celebrate this significant milestone, we’re unveiling a special edition on March 21st. This version, mastered at half-speed, along with the high-resolution transfer from the original tapes, promises an enhanced audio experience for listeners. Additionally, a freshly mixed Dolby Atmos version will be accessible for streaming. Furthermore, the album artwork has been refurbished, making it an attractive collector’s item. If you’re a Wings enthusiast, this is definitely worth checking out!

Wishbone Ash –  At The BBC 1970-1988

The BBC stores numerous exceptional band performances in their archives, some of which might have been misplaced or deteriorated over time. It’s always a treat when these hidden gems are unearthed and shared, allowing us to listen (and occasionally watch) timeless rock classics from their extensive collection.

On March 28th, Wishbone Ash’s BBC sessions from the archives will be compiled into a comprehensive box set titled “At The BBC 1970-1988“. This extensive collection spans over 11 CDs and includes a DVD. If you are familiar with the band, you would recognize their distinctive sound, largely due to Ted Turner and Andy Powell’s pioneering use of twin lead guitars.

These CDs contain previously unheard live material. The DVD features a 1971 performance on an early episode of the Old Grey Whistle Test, which was broadcast on BBC. While there’s some similarity across all the live sets, you’ll find numerous renditions of “Blowing Free”. It’s exciting to appreciate the variations in this classic song and all the others. Additionally, this set comes with a 72-page hardcover book.

Roger Waters – Super Deluxe Boxset of The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux

In this instance, another musical titan follows up with the third installment of these three offerings. However, one might wonder if Waters has overstepped a boundary. Here’s where a word of caution is in order. In October 2023, Waters unveiled his remodeled adaptation of The Dark Side of the Moon. This was to commemorate the golden anniversary of Pink Floyd’s legendary masterpiece.

On March 14, Waters is set to unveil an expansive edition of his remastered album. This collector’s item comes boxed with three vinyl records or two CDs and a Blu-ray disc. The package will feature some live performances captured at a promotional event held at the London Palladium, which was conducted shortly before the album’s release.

It’s unlikely that the parts where some viewers left or an agitated Waters cursing at fellow disgruntled audience members will be included. Many found it frustrating that Waters spent excessively long discussing his pet notes, particularly one named Donald, a duck.

The album by him was already sparking debate before the Palladium performance. Changing it doesn’t seem necessary to me, given its questionable quality at best. When his work was unveiled in 2023, opinions were divided. After all, Waters has always been divisive among Pink Floyd fans, yet he maintains a devoted following. Given this, there will likely be many eager to get their hands on this box set. However, with a price tag of £220, it’s only for die-hard fans or the very wealthy.
