The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis is hosting the debut U.S. museum exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Pan Daijing. Originating from Guiyang and currently residing in Berlin, Daijing is recognized for creating immersive, emotionally intense settings encompassing sound, sculpture, video, architecture, and most notably, performance. As a self-taught composer, she has garnered notice for her daring investigations into experimental and industrial sound, positioning her among the initial recipients of the Art Basel Awards’ honors.
In the exhibit titled “Sudden Places“, the artist converts the Burnet Gallery from a bright, minimal space into a dim, immersive environment that stirs feelings of disorder, boredom, and sadness, as described by the gallery’s announcement. The show features four significant pieces such as “The Hour Between Dog and Wolf” (2021–2024), her most expansive moving-image project yet, and “Scale Figures” (2021/25), a site-specific sound and sculpture installation where two voices harmoniously resonate in a chilling melody across the campus. Additionally, two new, unnamed paintings on canvas, inspired by her “Mute” exhibition at Haus der Kunst in Munich last spring, are also displayed.
Curator Pavel Pyś describes Daijing’s art as a way of subtly merging the artwork with its surroundings, resulting in powerful landscapes that evoke feelings of solitude, closeness, and trust. Experiencing Daijing’s work is about finding common ground between contrasting aspects – the personal and universal, being present and feeling absent, holding on to hope amidst despair.
Pan Daijing: Sudden Places is on view through July 6, 2025.
